Stow Theme Blog Page

    Hey all,

I am working on a client’s site and we are using the STOW THEME. We are now at the point where we want to edit the BLOG page (not editable) so that we can display a SEARCH textfield at the top right, and below that have the BLOG ARCHIVES. For some reason, this is not present with this theme. Is there any way to create this?

This is the client’s old site: https://susanmuaddidarraj.com/blog/ and we want the BOG page on the STOW THEME to have the same features:
blog posts in left side column (taking up majority of screen space)
search bar / blog archive in right side column (taking up the rest of the space)

    Thank you,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

blog posts in left side column (taking up majority of screen space)
search bar / blog archive in right side column (taking up the rest of the space)

So you want the site to display a sidebar on the Blog page, correct?

Stow wasn’t designed to have a sidebar, and there’s no setting available to add one. This also isn’t something that can be added via custom CSS code – CSS can be used to change the appearance of something already on the page, but it can’t add something that doesn’t already exist.

To create a sidebar on this theme, you’d need to create a child theme and use it to make extensive modifications to both the PHP and CSS code for the theme. We have some basic steps on how to get started with a child theme at the link below, but we don’t provide support for this type of customization, so if you’re not familiar with WordPress theme development, you might need to hire someone to do this work for you:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/themes/child-themes/

Your other options are to either use a different theme that does include a sidebar, or else use one of our new block themes instead – with block themes you can completely customize any aspect of the theme from within the site editor, including adding your own sidebar to a theme if it doesn’t have one already:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/add-a-sidebar/

Note that this won’t work with Stow, as Stow is not a block theme. Only our new themes under the Recommended tab at Appearance ->Themes support the site editor.

While it will take some effort, you can even start with a “blank” theme like Blockbase or Blank Canvas, and get pretty close to completely replicating Stow’s overall look. Though personally I wouldn’t recommend going all-out like that :) Better to find something that’s already close to what you want, and tweaking it from there.

Let me know if you have any questions. Also keep in mind that your Pro plan gives you access to direct support via the contact form at https://wordpress.com/help/contact, so you don’t need to post here in the forums for free sites for help on your site :)

    Hey Kokkieh,

Thank you for the detailed response. 3min after I sent that post, I solved the issue. For others wanting to do the same, here is a simple and quick solution.

    1. Do not use the “Blog” page that comes with the theme.
    2. Create a new page, call it “Blog2” or whatever. Make it a blank page.
    3. Create two columns (3/4 space | 1/4 space).
    4. Left Col (3/4 space) add the Blog feed widget. And set it to the visual you prefer. For me, I selected the LIST with image on the left.
    5. Right Col (1/4 space) add the Seach bar widget. Below that, add the Archive widget.
    6. Save page.
    7. Replace the stock “Blog” page with the new one you create “Blog2”. In the MENU label, rename Blog2 to Blog.
    8. Save menu.
    9. Test menu on home page to ensure it works.

Otherwise, you will have to follow Kokkieh’s steps above.

    Best,

  • That’s a clever workaround using the block editor. Thanks for sharing it :)
