Structure theme gallery picture question

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,

I have just set the Organic Themes “Structure” theme to my blog, and I have a CSS upgrade.

I would like to have different images as my ‘Featured Image’ and the gallery picture duplicated below it, but I have no idea where to start. Could anyone help me?

    Thank you

You could simply pick a different category to display the featured post from, which you can do in Appearance > Theme Options from your dashboard.

Alternatively, if you tend to post only to one category you can use the CSS code below to remove the first non-featured post from the list. If you regularly post to different categories it will not be as effective and it only works in recent browsers.

    .homepagemid div:nth-child(-n+2) {display:none;}

Thank you for such a quick response – unfortunately your advice didn’t seem to change my page at all.

What I would ideally like to be able to do is to set featured images for my posts, as I have already done, and choose a separate image for the large, dominant one.

I’ve read in several places that this can be done with the CSS upgrade, so any more advice would be greatly appreciated! Would it help if I posted the CSS onto this forum?

    Thanks again :)

“What I would ideally like to be able to do is to set featured images for my posts, as I have already done, and choose a separate image for the large, dominant one.”

You don’t need the CSS upgrade for that. The Homepage Top area displays the featured image of the latest post filed under a selected “featured” category. So just create a post with the featured image you want, file it under a category you won’t use for other posts, and select that category as your featured one.

Ok thank you both for such helpful responses, @panaghiotisadam I shall certainly take your advice and have a go, and hopefully have my CSS purchase refunded.

    Thanks again, best wishes

    Hi again!

@panaghiotisadam I’ve tried your method, and it’s fine apart from the fact that the main featured post generates a link to the latest article as a way of showcasing the newest post.

If I create a new post with a new featured image, the title/banner above it will link the reader to a blank post or one with information that I don’t want…or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

The Homepage Top area displays the title and the featured image of the latest post filed under the category you’ve set as your “featured” category. If newer posts are filed under different categories, the HT area won’t change.

There’s also a trick you can use to remove the whole HT area, but I don’t know if you’re interested in that.

Ah, italics…it’s like speaking slowly to a foreign person :)

Ok just a case of crossed wires – I saw on another forum topic that you’d advised another member to use a CSS upgrade, so that was where I’d taken my information from.

I’ll have a look into it, cheers for all the replies.

Well, guess you have to speak slower and with more italics for me, because I’ve read through it about 6 times and changed categories, posted new ones, and I still get a duplicate of the larger image and it again below!

@karenbethinc: Italics won’t help as long as your latest post is assigned to the category you’ve set as your featured one. If you want a permanent image in the Homepage Top area (is that what you want?), you’ll have to create a special post, set the featured image you want, file that post under a category you won’t use for any other post, then go to Appearance > Theme Options and select that category as your “Featured Category”.

    Workings of Structure explained here:

    Introduction to the Structure theme

    Hi karenbethinc,

If I can help, I’ll give you an example, I had exactly the same problem.

The ‘grey box’ are will always show either your latest post OR a category of your choice; you can choose which by going to Appearance > Theme Options > Featured Category, and making your choice by clicking on the drop-down box.

If you select ‘None: use the most recent post’, the ‘grey box’ image will always have a duplicate underneath it, because the blogs are displayed chronologically.

Instead, what you can do is to mark your favourite post (the one that you want to appear in the big top area) with your chosen category title, eg. ‘fashion’, and then mark it as ‘FEATURED’ as well.

Then, go back to Appearance > Theme Options > Featured Category and select ‘FEATURED’ as the category to be shown.

Every time you want to make a specific post appear in that top area, set it in the ‘FEATURED’ category and carry on posting as many other articles as you like.

However, if your ‘FEATURED’ post is also your latest post, the image will, unfortunately, show a duplicate underneath until you create another post and shove it one peg down on your page.

    ^ that’s what Pan’s trying to explain.

my original problem with this theme was that
    1) I didn’t want the same images to appear twice ANYWHERE on my blog, and
    2) I’d seen Pan’s recommendation of the CSS upgrade here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/structure-theme-featured-header-postimage-question?replies=8

so that’s why my question hasn’t really been answered…but it’s a start, and I’ll keep looking for myself (until I give up and never look at this theme again, hahaha)

best of luck, message me if you get stuck!
