Structured data tags
-
Looking over the source code for my page, I can see that WordPress does not insert any structured data tags.
1) is there any way to add these from my end?
2) how do we get these added to the product?
For better or worse, and in this case better, we live in the Google universe. It’s in everyone’s best interest, especially WordPress’, to ensure we offer as much data as we can to them.
As it stands, the markup is almost impossible to use. For instance, the “author name” on an article is simply text in the middle of a long string, there are no tags on it that allow it to be selected out of the string. Likewise the article title is simply an H2 tag, no class, id or anything else to ID it as the title. Adding a bit of tagging to these would make it much easier to tag up in Google.

Structured data is an interesting topic. You could try leveraging Google Authorship, which is available: http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-plus-profile/
Good content will always be found no matter how it is marked up.

The new ebook from WordPress.com: “Grow Your Traffic, Build Your Blog” might be of interest too: https://dailypost.wordpress.com/postaday/ebook-grow-traffic/

While its true the content will be found, presentation always counts. Adding these tags can greatly improve the look of the “hits” on Google.

You might want to consider moving your site to a standalone WP.org instance so you can have more control over the markup.
If you do so you can use plugins like these:

I’ve thought about that on a couple of occasions. Is there a good primer doc on what I’m looking at in terms of time and money?

It is pretty easy, and there is quite a bit of information available. Here is a good start: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/
There is also a WordPress.com service that can do it for you, known as Guided Transfer: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
Keep in mind you will not be able to keep the theme you’re using, but can pick from huge library on WP.org for new one.

Just to clarify – the only reason you would not be able to keep using the theme you are using (Regulus) is because it has been retired, see message the bottom: http://theme.wordpress.com/retired/regulus/
However there are lots of amazing free themes available on WP.org
