Struggling How To Show Posts in Grid Format
-
Hi,
I’m extremely new to WordPress. I’m using the Arcade premium theme and with some help I’ve been able to create a basic site.
One thing I am struggling to do is list posts in a grid and have posts displayed as clickable thumbnails rather than text.
For example, here is my sites playlist page…
http://supersoulfrieddisco.com/category/playlists/
But I would like to display them like this example shown below…
http://www.beatsinspace.net/playlists
Can anyone help please ?
Thanks,
MThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

hi,
I haven’t purchased the Arcade theme, so what I share below is not out of my experience with the theme, but purely based on my experience over the years with WordPress, so take the suggestions with a pinch of salt.Grid layout is not available for the theme. The theme author clarifies this himself in the support thread here. So the closest option for you is to make it look like the “Post block” section shown in the demo (https://arcadedemo.wordpress.com/) just before the footer.
You may want to look for the “Post block” under page attributes while creating a new page.
The author has explained about this feature briefly in the theme overview under the section “Post block page template” here.
Also do note that the Page block is available only for pages and not for posts. The theme author clears this up in this thread. Now about lack of images in the page you have shared. Your posts don’t have custom image headers. Once you add custom image headers to your posts and pages and use the post block template, You should have a page that looks closer to http://www.beatsinspace.net/playlists.
You may want to go through this support document about choosing the template and setting custom image headers.
https://wordpress.com/themes/arcade/support/
Look for the sections Full Width posts/Page template and custom header image sections.Feel free to get in touch, if you still have questions.

Looks like simplysaru has given you a really thorough response. (Thanks, simplysaru!)
Let us know if you need further help, or feel free to post in the forum for Arcade, where the developer himself will be glad to assist you:

Hi,
Thank you so much for this information, you have been extremely helpful and I can’t recommend the support on here enough. I’m completely new to WordPress so yes this there is a steep learning curve but I am learning something every day. Forgive me if some of my questions are asking the obvious as it does sometimes seem overwhelming and confusing.
The page http://supersoulfrieddisco.com/category/playlists/ which has all the shows posted on is actually a category, as I didn’t know how to put posts on a page. I’m now just noticing on categories it doesn’t give you the option to use a Post Block template. Is there a way that I can put all my show posts on a page and use the Post Block to display them, again I apologise if I’m missing something obvious.
Also I must have added some code because one of my posts includes a list of other posts http://supersoulfrieddisco.com/2015/05/08/391/ but I can’t seem to locate it in order to remove this bullet point list of posts.
Is it possible someone can help me please ?
Best,
Mark -
hi Mark,
This Post block template creates a page with 4 recent posts. Sorry, you can’t add all of your posts. The page layout is dynamically generated using four recent posts.I tried the self hosted version of the theme on my site to help you out.
You can see the page I created during testing on my site here. I just had to create a new page, give the page a title (in my case dummie) and set the page template to Post block and pressed publish (no content whatsoever). The template pulled 4 recent posts from my blog and it made it self look as a post block. Since my posts were in different types (link, standard, etc.) the layout looks uninteresting. I have deleted the page and reverted my theme back to what I had earlier.
So I would suggest you try this on your blog with a new page and see how it goes.I did look into the post http://supersoulfrieddisco.com/2015/05/08/391/ and I am not able to really distinguish if you have used a code block or just created a list of posts (with links) manually. I would let Kathryn or a staff to look into your post and help you with this.
Hope it helps. Feel free to get in touch with us in this thread or with the theme author directly here https://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/arcade.

Hi,
I was thinking it may just be easier to purchase another theme which has a grid format as functionality.
What do you think of this one do you think it will cater for everything I need with respect to everything we’ve discussed ?

Getting back to your very first question, if you’re looking for a WordPress.com theme that displays posts in a grid format, here are a few you could check out:
Free
Pictorico – https://pictoricodemo.wordpress.com/
Visual – https://visualdemo.wordpress.com/Premium
Ubud – https://ubuddemo.wordpress.com/
Massive Press – https://massivepressdemo.wordpress.com/
Gridspace – https://gridspacedemo.wordpress.com/
Gallery – https://gallerydemo.wordpress.com/
Poly – https://polydemo.wordpress.com/
Nexus – https://nexusdemo.wordpress.com/I did look into the post http://supersoulfrieddisco.com/2015/05/08/391/ and I am not able to really distinguish if you have used a code block or just created a list of posts (with links) manually. I would let Kathryn or a staff to look into your post and help you with this.
You’re using the Display Posts shortcode to generate the list of posts displayed at the top:
Looking at the Arcade documentation, the Post Block Format is only intended for the front page of a site:
Post Block Page Template
Create an impressive looking block of posts on your home page instead of the default single post stream using the custom Post Block page template. Create a page and select the template from the dropdown list, then set your home page to display that page as your static front page.
Before giving up on Arcade, you could try asking for help in the Arcade forum, to see if it’s possible for Arcade to display your posts as you’d like. The developer knows the theme best and will be glad to answer your questions directly. The Arcade forum is here:

That’s not a theme you’ll be able to use here on WordPress.com. Sites hosted on WordPress.com must use one of the 300+ themes available in our theme showcase here:
It’s not possible to upload third-party themes on WordPress.com, but if you’re thinking of switching over to a site that you host yourself, you would be able to use it.
You can learn more here about the differences between WordPress.com, and WordPress.org, aka self-hosted WordPress:

Hi ssfdadmin,
I am also trying to create a grid layout for posts for our company website. You seem to have achieved success at your website:
http://supersoulfrieddisco.com/
What theme did you end up using to achieve that look? We also want to include a side-scrolling feature image bar like you have under radio>playlists.
great looking website and thanks in advance!
-
@tshenheintges,
I think the theme ssfdadmin is using on his site is Divi. I don’t think that theme is available at WordPress.com for you to try it out on your site. You may have to be self hosted to try that theme on your site.
-
@tshenheintges, see @kathrynwp’s response right above yours for some good information and links to some themes that have a grid layout. As far as a scrolling sidebar, that can be done in many themes with custom CSS, but having two sections on one page that scroll independently of one another can be confusing for users. We could possibly set a fixed height for a Music Player Widget and set it for auto overflow to create a scrolling list. See our Audio Support Page for more information.

Thanks, for the prompt response guys. I think Divi is indeed the theme here.
@thesacredpath. Ah sorry for the poor wording. When I said “side-scrolling feature image bar”. I’m not referring to having another scroll on the side (like a widget). I am only referring to that main horizontal image that changes every few seconds like a slideshow.
After poking around a bit more, it does seem like we will probably need to move towards the self hosting option. Cosmetics aside, the central operational function we need to have is a page/post filtering system pretty much exactly like:
http://themetrust.com/demos/reveal/
Ideally, the filter would take multiple inputs, for example if “New York” and “2014” were highlighted, it would show projects in New York in 2014. Maybe a discussion for a separate topic.
It would be nice if someone could confirm that this is indeed best done in .org (as this seems to be a html function) and point me to some themes that maybe already have this filtering built in?
-
Given what you have outlined @tshenheintges, I think .org may be your best choice. While we can organize with categories and use category menu items to limit the display of posts, multiple inputs would be a problem here at WordPress.com.
