Struggling to find where to plug in my personal domain

  • Unknown's avatar

Help? I have a domain but I don’t see where to go to add my domain per the instructions offered.

Also, I’m struggling to see where to actually publish a new blog. My ‘hello world’ was pretty much an accident in that I’m trouble duplicating it.

    Help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Kelly,

I see you added domain mapping for your domain kellyamidonblog.com. However, that domain is currently set up to redirect visitors from there to your free address kellyamidon.wordpress.com. To make that domain work properly with your WordPress.com site, you’ll need to change its name servers to these:

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

GoDaddy has instructions for making that change here:

    https://support.godaddy.com/help/article/12317/setting-custom-nameservers-for-domains-registered-with-us

You can also contact GoDaddy support for more help with that step. Once that’s done, your domain will be linked directly to your WordPress.com site.

Also, I’m struggling to see where to actually publish a new blog. My ‘hello world’ was pretty much an accident in that I’m trouble duplicating it.

You can click the pencil icon in the top right at https://wordpress.com/ to write a new blog post and publish it on your site. Alternately, you can go directly to the editor here to write a new post:

    https://wordpress.com/post

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thank you so much for your help. I will follow through as you suggested and “cross my fingers”.

    Rachel,

My new domain is working properly…thank you again. Under “Get Connected” I added the contact info for my LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook accounts. I would like these to show on my blogs and thought I took the necessary steps…however they are not showing up. What have I done wrong?

Thank you for your continued support!

    Hope you’re well.

    Hi Kelly,

The connections you added to LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are all working — but adding those won’t make those accounts show up on your blog itself. Those connections (which you can manage on your site’s sharing page) will automatically share your blog posts to each of those accounts whenever you publish a new post on your blog. You can read more about that on our Publicize support page if you’d like to learn more.

If you want links to those accounts to also show up on your blogs, you can add the Social Media Icons Widget to one of the Widget areas in your site’s Customizer. That’s separate from the Publicize feature you’ve connected already.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

Thank you Rachel. I will follow your instructions and appreciate your help.

    Hope you’re well.

    Rachel,

Wish I could talk to you by phone. I’m sure you could take care of me quickly. So my Twitter and Facebook links are working however I’m still struggling to figure out my user name with LinkedIn and YouTube. Can you help?

Second, I added the WordPress Follow button. How is this different from the other widget where you click the link to add your email and subscribe the my blog?

Finally, there is an “About” paragraph with my photo at the bottom of my blog’s first page. What different info should I be adding to the About link located at the top of the page?

Thank you for your continued support.

    Hi Kelly,

WordPress.com doesn’t have phone support, but I’m happy to keep helping you here!

So my Twitter and Facebook links are working however I’m still struggling to figure out my user name with LinkedIn and YouTube.

On LinkedIn, your username is part of the link to your public profile. When you go to the Profile section on LinkedIn, you can find the link to your public profile under your profile photo (at the bottom of the section with your photo, name, job title, etc.). That link looks something like this:

    https://linkedin.com/in/USERNAME

You can copy the last part of the link (USERNAME in this example) and paste it into the widget on your site.

For YouTube, you can also find your username in the link to your YouTube channel. The link to your YouTube channel looks something like this:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/USERNAME

You can copy the username from the end of that link, as well, to paste into the widget.

If you run into trouble with that, please give me the links to your LinkedIn and YouTube pages so I can take a look for you. :)

Second, I added the WordPress Follow button. How is this different from the other widget where you click the link to add your email and subscribe the my blog?

The Follow Button in that widget creates a button that WordPress.com users can click on to follow your blog, and it will let those users follow your blog in the WordPress.com Reader and/or via email. The Follow Blog Widget, in contrast, is just for following blogs via email and works whether or not the reader has a WordPress.com account.

Finally, there is an “About” paragraph with my photo at the bottom of my blog’s first page. What different info should I be adding to the About link located at the top of the page?

That’s entirely up to you. :) Some people like to write a longer bio on that separate About page, but if you don’t need it you could also delete that About page and just have that paragraph at the bottom of your blog posts.

Thank you Rachel. No worries on the phone calls. You have been a huge help and I’m getting there. Please confirm that it’s OK for me to dialogue back and forth with you. I’m getting close to having my blog where I want it. This is my first blog and while its pretty simple, there is still a learning curve and I appreciate your excellent support.

I will do my homework from your answers last night and will be in touch…

    Happy Thursday!

    Hi Kelly,

You’re absolutely welcome to keep asking questions here. :) If I’m not available to reply, another Happiness Engineer will step in to give you a hand.

And I completely understand the learning curve — I’m glad things are working out so far! Enjoy your day, and let me know how things go with the issues from earlier.

    Rachel,

Hope this finds you well. I edited my “About” page and feel good about my message. I’m a little confused about a few small things. I changed my “follow” message on the right column to subscribe to my blog. It’s reading that I already have 371 followers. How is this possible? I haven’t shared my URL with anyone.

Also, why is the text showing “add another page” and “edit” when this page has been saved? Am I doing something wrong?

We’re getting really close. Once you help with my LinkedIn and YouTube user names and the questions above, I will be ready to start posting.

Thank you again for your help.

    Hi Kelly,

My two URL’s are as follows:
    https://www.linkedin.com/pub/kelly-amidon-ceas-i-nasm-cpt/19/b31/505
    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi7RaKXsdgV5TTdxac25xxg

Ok, I missed a step with the LinkedIn profile – sorry! The first step is to customize your LinkedIn public profile URL. (That will make sure it starts with https://www.linkedin.com/in/ so it’s in the right format for the widget on your site.) Then, you can grab the last part of your profile’s URL (the part you customize) to add to the widget.

For your YouTube channel, you can enter just the last part in the widget: UCi7RaKXsdgV5TTdxac25xxg

Let me know how that goes!

I changed my “follow” message on the right column to subscribe to my blog. It’s reading that I already have 371 followers. How is this possible?

When you set up the Publicize feature (to publicize your recent posts to your social media accounts) all of your followers on those social media accounts are counted in your follow widget there.

If you check out your Stats page page, you’ll see one box with your site’s followers (no one yet since you haven’t shared your URL yet) and a box below that with your social media followers. All of those add up to the 371 total followers you’re seeing.

Also, why is the text showing “add another page” and “edit” when this page has been saved? Am I doing something wrong?

The “Edit” link will always be there, and only you can see it when you view the page. That’s a quick link you can use to edit the page whenever you need. (Visitors to your site can’t see that link.)

That “add another page” link is an extra link that’s at the bottom of your About page’s content. If you click the “Edit” link to edit that About page again, and then scroll down to the very bottom of the area where you added the content to that page, you’ll see that link. You can delete that to remove it from the page.

    Rachel,

Miss me? I published my first few blogs…yippee!! However tonight I ran into a little snag. Please look at my “There is No Tomorrow” and you will see the one paragraph with the large font. I copied and pasted a quote that was in a larger font and it seems to have “infected” my overall post. How do I change the font size?

Thank you as always for your excellent support.

    Hope you’re well.

    Hi Kelly,

Copy/pasting text into a post from other sources will often bring in un-necessary HTML and can cause the text not to display correctly in your post. When you want to paste text into a post so that you have control over the display, I recommend using the Paste as Text option. It is located in your Visual Editor on the second tool bar and appears as a T on a clipboard.

To learn more about the editing options in the Visual Editor and for a screen shot of what the “paste as text” icon looks like, check out this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/.

    Have a great week!

    Rachel,

Good morning! My blogs are coming along and I appreciate your help. Please look at my draft “Is a 29″ Desk Right for You”? The two small jpg’s located near the beginning of the past are smaller than what I would prefer. I tried making them before before importing and the system seems to insert them at the same “small” size. Any words of wisdom? They are really two small to be able to clearly read as they are now.

Thank you for your support. Hope this finds you well.
