    hi,

Im trying to set up a blog, I get stuck at step 4 where it wants me to register a domain name. I just want to use the extension: wordpress.com.
No personal domain name nothing. somehow I can’t skipt this part and I get stuck. is a domain name registration mandatory now?

    HI there,

A domain is a custom name for your website/blog that’s hosted with WordPress.com
You must have it because it tells people where to look for your blog site. So yes it’s mandatory.
Example: myblog.wordpress.com will be your domain name. This is using the free address with WordPress.com subdomain.

If you want to use another alternative, you can use a custom domain name for your blog site, example: myblog.com
This requires a WordPress.com plan that you can easily purchase with us.

You can read all about Domains and how to set up your blog over here:

I hope this answers your question and good luck with your blog!!!

I tried filling in what you said and it just shows me other options…. I can’t choose lookinsidethehourglass.wordpress.com

  • As you own the lookinsidethehourglass username, you are the only person who can register lookinsidethehourglass.wordpress.com.

Why are you saying you can’t choose it? Is it not being suggested as the option for the free WordPress.com address? If so, what are you typing in as the search term on the domains step? And what free address is being suggested?

If you’re seeing a free .blog address suggestion, that’s because you selected “Blog” as the type of site on the first step. To have the option for a WordPress.com address instead, select Professional or Business as the option in the first step. Or else, go ahead and create the site with the free .blog address, and then you can change it to a WordPress.com address afterwards.

I’m trying to add pictures here but can’t. There is no option to just stick with wordpress extension.
Ok I’ll upload pics on my twitter.
    @tismekae
I have used wordpress before and I have no idea what the hell I’m doing wrong..

  • Oh okay, I see what you mean now. You see suggestions you can use, but you’re not obliged to register a custom domain.

In general, the free option is usually displayed at the end of the list of suggestions so you can check there but, if you don’t see the desired address,
in the search box where you now see “lookinsidethehourglass” try typing the whole address you want to register: “lookinsidethehourglass.wodpress.com”.

    I hope that helps :)

If you’d like to add screenshots to your replies, you can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/), or follow the instructions described here:

  • Okay, I’ve tested this on your account and took a screenshot for you. When creating a site, you’ll first be asked about the type of site you want to create. Please choose “Business” there. In the next screen, type “blog” or whatever describes your site – it does not really matter but it influences the domain suggestions you’ll get.

When you get to the next step and type in your desired address, this is what you will see: https://d.pr/i/ODcKhl

Cool, because I chose personal because I’m not a business..
    If this changes everything awesome!
    Thank you!

  • Yes, it sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but it really does not matter what you choose in the long run. You may just see different domain or theme suggestions but since you can change all that later on, it’s not important :)
