Stuck, lost and confused!

  • Unknown's avatar

I was using the premium theme ‘Portfolio’ where- to make an image or post a portfolio item, I just had to check a box in the menu of that post.

I’m trying to switch to the premium theme ‘Ubud’ For a simpler layout but everything is confusing me and I can’t get my head around it. I’m such a noob!

    Main problems are-

I would like my home page to be the portfolio page. (I only want one single portfolio for my artwork- and I want it to be the one that http://www.mikeharman.com lands on) at the moment, it seems to land on my posts- and so my ‘blog’? How can I fix that please?

Now I can have ‘portfolios’ menu i didn’t use on the other theme. Do I have to take all the Images (that are in posts) and make them in ‘portfolio’ now?

I’m trying to make sense of – how to set it up- what I have to do- and when I start reading about copy and pasting ‘shortcodes’ I’m wondering if I made a mistake getting this new theme which LOOKS great but is a mess of complication compared to my old idiot proof ‘portfolio’ theme…

Any help please?! I’m reading lots, and nothing seems to click in my head, just confuse things more… the live preview for Ubud just shows it working as a blog? I can’t distinguish the difference between it’s blog posts and it’s portfolio page…

Thanks very much for any help. please excuse my rambling!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Mike,

Let’s handle these issues step by step. You’ve successfully activated ubud, so that’s step one.

I would like my home page to be the portfolio page. (I only want one single portfolio for my artwork- and I want it to be the one that http://www.mikeharman.com lands on) at the moment, it seems to land on my posts- and so my ‘blog’? How can I fix that please?

    1. Go to the Reading Settings in your dashboard.
    2. Follow the instructions here to setup a page a static front page:
      http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/#setting-up-a-static-front-page
    3. On the page you just selected as your static front page, add the [portfolio] shortcode to the page’s body. This will display all your Portfolio projects on your static front page.

Now I can have ‘portfolios’ menu i didn’t use on the other theme. Do I have to take all the Images (that are in posts) and make them in ‘portfolio’ now?

To use that Portfolio option, you’ll need to add that content into Portfolio projects. Read here about how the Portfolio works:

    Create a Portfolio Website

Right now it appears all your content is inside of Featured Images in Posts. There isn’t a simple way to transfer these, you’ll just need to add those images as Featured Images to separate Portfolio projects. All your images from those posts are already in your media library, so you won’t need to upload them, just select them from the media library.

The first steps are really getting the Portfolio projects made, and making that static page with just the default [portfolio] shortcode in the body. You’ll see what the default behavior is that way.

Editing the shortcode is only required if you want to start changing how many posts appear… only posts with certain tags… etc.

Let me know if you have issues with these first two bits – the static page, and creating the portfolio projects. I can help you customize further from there.

    Thanks Alex!

You did well to tackle all of that- I will give what you suggest a try!

I had initially thought of blogging on Tumblr and linking it to WP- the maker of the theme (replying on a theme support topic) said that The theme doesn’t support portfolios, and that I can’t have the url locate to anyplace other than the blog and ‘posts’- so I thought setting up a tumblr was my only option!

I’ll be glad if I can blog on WP though- I like having everything in one place! I’ll give it a try later this evening or tomorrow if possible-

Thanks again for the advice, makes a big difference to have the support!

    all the best-

    Mike

Thinking about it- I did uploadup some dummy projects when I was setting up- when you look at the page they are displayed on they looked pretty bad though- small previews one under the other- not the nice square grid layout I’ve got going on with posts- I wonder if that’s why she said it doesn’t support projects?

    Hi Mike,

This may sound weird: ubud supports Portfolio projects, but doesn’t include Portfolios. To explain… if you get Portfolio projects from using another theme, then switch to ubud, you can use the Portfolio in ubud. If you never had portfolios, then switch to ubud, ubud doesn’t give you access to portfolios. The theme was meant to offer some of the same look-and-feel of portfolios while using the simpler Posts and Pages.

Here’s a super-quick test I did of using the [portfolio] code for a homepage in ubud:

Ahhh okay, that makes sense -I think! (I would never have worked this out without your help!)

Sorry to change approach slightly, but because I’m almost there in terms of how I want it to look and navigate now apart from just one thing…I wonder what the easiest / best way to do this is please-

Is there a way- to keep it as it is, but to have a new page- that I can add selected posts to? (and to NOT have those certain posts appear in what I am using as the ‘gallery’ / ‘portfolio’ / homepage of the site)

The purpose would be to use it as a blog page- There are posts I would like to make that aren’t homepage / portfolio worthy but I still want to share them with readers- works in progress- competitions – news- things like that…

I’ve currently linked my ‘blog’ menu Item to my tumblr, but I want to be able to blog on wordpress to the followers I have there…

What do you think? Is there a good way to do it please?

Thanks again for the help, much appreciated!

    Mike

    Hey Mike!

Sorry for the delay. I just read through your conversation with Alex and I think I understand what you want. Unfortunately, the best ways to do this doesn’t allow you to display your Portfolio on your front page.

The way I’m thinking of involves creating a Category Page for your portfolio items. However, there’s no way to make a Category Page your Front page.

Let me know if I can help with anything else!
