Stuff under menu headings

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I’m pretty rubbish at this – the terminology confuses me and the tutorials have never matched what I can see (!) but today I seem to have lost all my headings. I have put them back, but the posts are no longer in their categories so when I click on a heading, there’s nothing there! How do I get them back where they should be?I’m utterly perplexed! Thank you

  • Hi there,

So you want your menu tabs to each list posts matching that category?

There are two ways to do that:

Currently you have those menu tabs linking to blank pages on your site. One option is to edit each of those pages at Pages ->All Pages, and add the Blog Posts block to each. Then you can set that block to only display posts from one category:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/

With this option you won’t need to edit the menu, but you’ll need to edit every page you’ve created.

Option 2 is to edit your menu, and replace all the current page links, with category links instead. In other words, each menu link would display the matching category archive which is generated automatically, for example, https://ricoshayrambling.home.blog/category/roadtrip/

    * To do this, go to Appearance ->Customize ->Menus ->Home Page (that’s the title of the menu currently active on your site).
    * Remove all the menu items you have currently, that are linking to your empty pages.
    * Click Add Item to create a new menu tab, and select the Categories option. From there you can then select all the categories you want in the menu.

If a category you want isn’t showing there, it’s because you don’t have a post published in that category yet. In that case, first assign a post to that category, and then go back and add the category to the menu.

I hope this helps, but please don’t hesitate to ask if you run into any trouble
with these steps or have any other questions.

Thank you so much, @kokkieh, that’s sorted it! It used to be like that so not sure what I pressed to break it, but all nice and tidy again now!
