StumbleUpon Sharing button disappeared
-
I noticed a few hours ago that the StumbleUpon sharing button disappeared from my blog/posts and is no longer listed under “Sharing Settings” > “Sharing Buttons” > “Enabled Services”. Is there a way to retrieve? Or is StumbleUpon no longer supported by WordPress.com?
Thanks

It does appear to be missing. I’ve tagged this thread for staff to follow up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and be patient while waiting.
If anyone else has the same problem, please DO NOT POST here, but only subscribe and then wait for a staff response. Posting further in this thread will cause a delay in staff responding, so please only subscribe so you see when staff respond.

Hi everyone.
The StumbleUpon sharing button was removed. The button used exclusively http which causes mixed-content warnings and sometimes fails completely on https sites. Since the majority of WordPress.com has moved to https and StumbleUpon has stated publicly that they don’t intend to update their buttons, we’ve removed them.

@lizthefair-then what that this portend (if anything) for services that don’t support https that we’ve manually added to our sharing buttons?

Is there any way to add it on an individual basis? It accounted for hundreds of hits a week for me. Do I need to leave wordpress?

then what does this portend
@miriamswell-it can be added through the “add a new service” link on the Sharing Settings page, but you need to know what to add there. I don’t know the answer to that, but it does reflect on my question to @lizthefair above.

justjennifer — We will continue to support custom buttons regardless of protocol. It’s possible an http only button wouldn’t work if the site is loaded over https, but we won’t limit your ability to create those buttons.

Seems like we must convince StumbleUpon to update their button. @lizthefair Thanks for the info. I’m assuming this same issue is happening on wordpress.org as well?

It would cause the same problem on self-hosted sites, but I don’t believe a decision has been made on whether it will be removed from JetPack.

@lizthefair – Barring StumbleUpon moving to https, it would certainly be nice to help out those community members on WordPress.com who wish to add back the StumbleUpon button on their sites manually by posting the appropriate code to be added in the “Add a New Service”.
Ryan Markel didn’t include StumbleUpon in his landmark blog post on additional sharing services nor in the forum thread from 2010 because it was already included in the services provided by WordPress.com. So any help here, official or unofficial, would be appreciated. TIA

Here’s the code you need for the sharing URL
http://www.stumbleupon.com/badge?url=%post_full_url%The icon URL will depend on what you which icon you want to use, but that’s easier to find.

where do we find the icon URL?
You’ll find an icon that you like–it needs to be 16px by 16px, upload it to your media library, and pull the link from there.

Thanks @lizthefair
You can find the current StumbleUpon icon on Wikimedia Commons, but it looks like you will need to resize it.
