Stumped by galleries

I was able to create a photo gallery easily enough but I’m stumped by two things.

First, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to edit the gallery–add, delete or move thumbnails. Can’t find any controls for those things.

Next, all the gallery thumbnails are overwritten by the text captions which obscure the thumbnails from view making them rather pointless. Can’t find a way to fix that either.

I’m using the 2014 theme if that matters.

    Help would be appreciated.

    Hi there,

If you have added the gallery using the Gallery or Tiled Gallery block, you can edit the images by following the steps mentioned here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/#block-settings

    or

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/tiled-gallery-block/#reordering-images

For the captions, you can follow the steps mentioned to remove the captions from the images here: https://wordpress.com/support/media/#edit-media-details

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers!

Thanks for your help, but none of that seems to work for me. Still stumped.

I added the gallery using the add gallery block tool.

I don’t see on my page what is shown in the tutorial. There is no toolbar that pops up when I click on the gallery such as that which is seen in the animation in the WordPress.com tutorial under Reordering Images. There are no numbers on the thumbnails in my gallery. There is no way to select the thumbnails or move them to different positions. Clicking the pencil icon (at the top of the page, there is no other) as stated in the tutorial doesn’t seem to do anything other than produce a popup window that says Edit or Select and clicking on either one of those doesn’t seem to change anything other than produce the rather rather counterintuitive instructions “Tools offer different interactions for block selection & editing. To select, press Escape, to go back to editing, press Enter.”

Clicking on a thumbnail in the gallery so as then to be able to use the left/right arrow icons doesn’t produce any left right arrows on the thumbnails such as those shown in the tutorial, and the arrows on my keyboard only move the insertion point through the caption text.

As to the captions, I don’t want to change the captions in the media library as per the tutorial to which you referred me, I just want hide the captions to overlay the thumbnails in the gallery. The instructions you pointed me to don’t seem to address that issue. Fortunately, I figured out on my own that if I click on a thumbnail in the gallery I can select the captioning and delete it. Thankfully, this does not seem to effect the captioning I included when I first placed the image in the media library. It would be nice if the captions I created in the media library would show up in the Comments field of the slide show instead of on the thumbnails themselves, but, as it seems to me, WordPress has got this one bassackwards.

Separately, the linking options don’t seem to do anything at all. Regardless of which I choose the preview gallery behaves the same, opening the image I clicked in a slide show window with arros at left and right to scroll through the photos.

    Any other ideas? Anyone?

I tried making a new gallery thinking the original was corrupted but nothing changed when I did. I tried Chrome instead of Safari. Same thing.
