Stupid question about Messages between blogs
-
Sorry but I couldn’t seem to find the answer elsewhere.
I received a Message from one of the blogs that I follow. It came directly to my blog-associated email address and appeared to come directly FROM the sender’s email address. In other words it wasn’t in the same format as a Comment Notification email would be. This is the first time I’ve received a Message and have never sent one myself.
In my blog Settings I’ve always had my email address set to Private (not shown publicly).
When someone sends a Message to a blogger whose email is not shown publicly here, does the sender actually SEE the recipient’s email address at any time in that process?
I am curious because on my end the message appears exactly as if the sender had sent it directly from their email account to mine, with no “intermediary” whatsoever.
How does one go about sending a Message to another blog(ger) anyway? It’s probably staring me right in the face (lol) but for the life of me I can’t find it (I’m using Chateau theme).
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It came directly to my blog-associated email address and appeared to come directly FROM the sender’s email address.
The email address we register username accounts with is our unique identifier and it appears to the recipient when we submit comments on blog posts.

I do know that, but that’s not exactly my question. :-) This wasn’t a Comment, it was a “Message”. A direct one-to-one message. The subject line of the email I received says simply “Message from (name of sender)”.
When someone comments on one of my blog pages I receive an email from WordPress with the subject line of “[The Chatsworth Lady] Please moderate (title of page that the person made the comment on)”
But the email I received does not look as if it comes from WordPress. It does relate to an exchange of comments on one of my posts though.
My question is about the email address of the recipient, not the sender. :-)
For example, if you want to send me a Message (not post a comment, but send a direct message) do you the sender see my (the recipient) email address at any point during that process?

Do you have a contact form and is this a feedback on it?

No, actually I have not had a Contact Form anywhere on my blog until literally about a half hour ago (lol) which is when I inserted it into three of my Pages. I didn’t even realize they existed until I began to look for reasons why someone was apparantly able to send a direct message to me at an email address that supposedly appears nowhere on my blog.
I do have a Contact Form now but the Message about which I’m asking was sent about 3 hours ago. So there’s no way that anyone could have contacted me via a contact form that didn’t exist. :-)
Adding the tag now, thanks!

You’re welcome. It could be that Staff are creating a new feature and testing it on some sites.

Hi there,
When you comment on another blogger’s site, your comment includes your display name and email address. The blog’s administrator can view your email address there, but it is not displayed publicly on the blog where you leave the comment.
You can find out more about what blog owners see when you leave a comment on the Manage Comments support page, or by checking out the comments left on your own blog in your blog’s WP Admin dashboard:
https://chatsworthlady.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php
In that case, if you leave a comment on a blog, the blog’s administrator could then email you directly using the email address listed with your comment.

RachelMCR, thank you for your response but again, as I explained in my posts above, (ul) I am not asking about COMMENTS (ul)….. I am asking about a DIRECT MESSAGE that was sent to ME.
Another WordPress user sent me a DIRECT EMAIL MESSAGE (or that is what it appears to be, from the header in the email that I received) to an email address that I have not given to anyone other than to WordPress as the email address associated with my account.
That email address is NOT supposed to be displayed publicly anywhere on my blog.
At the time the MESSAGE was sent, I did not have a Comment Form ANYWHERE on my blog.
Therefore, my question (which again has nothing whatsoever to do with COMMENTS) has two parts:
(1) What is the mechanism by which one WordPress user is able to send a DIRECT MESSAGE to another user even though the recipient’s email is not displayed anywhere on the recipient’s blog, nor does the recipient have a Comment Form anywhere on their blog?
and
(2) Using said mechanism, is the RECIPIENT’s email address made visible to the SENDER of such a message?
I’m sorry to be using all caps but as I’m sure you can see, I have tried to make it clear all through this post that I am NOT talking about someone making a Comment…. but apparantly people are not understanding that.
So again… I am looking for an answer that applies to SENDING A MESSAGE…. this has nothing to do with either sending or receiving a Comment.

Hi there,
I’m sorry for the confusion. My explanation was about how another blog owner could see your email address, which they could then use to email you directly (using their own email, not through WordPress.com). Your email address is not displayed publicly, but when you leave a comment on someone else’s blog they are able to see your email address privately while managing the comments on their blog.

Good grief, I am an idiot. :-/
Thanks so much, I didn’t even make the connection. Obviously I need to change my WordPress associated email to a web-based one, because I don’t want my ISP email address “out there”.
Thanks so much for your patience! Marking the topic closed (in great embarassment, LOL) now. :-)
