Stupid Question, But: Domain Names

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,

I know this is a stupid question, but I’m worried I might muck something up and the help page made me a little unsure, so I thought I would ask for help here.

I am perfectly happy with my blog. I just want to change the address (the $18 upgrade) so it is, e.g., ukipealing.com.

If I do this, will people have problems accessing the site? Will all the page addresses etc be upgraded?

I want everything to be exactly the same but just ukipealing.com as opposed to ukipealing.wordpress.com.

If I buy the $18 upgrade, will it have any side affects, or will my blog automatically be fine?

Hope you can help. I’m so worried it’ll get mucked up in the address change process.

Well, I would like to correct you on one point before anything else: there is no such thing as a stupid question, except for the one left unasked.

    Answer:

Visitors will be automatically redirected from your old WordPress.com address to your new domain.

I want everything to be exactly the same but just ukipealing.com as opposed to ukipealing.wordpress.com.

And it will be, well; not entirely. It won’t have the .wordpress.com extention.

If I buy the $18 upgrade, will it have any side affects, or will my blog automatically be fine?

Depends on how you see the side effects. It will leave your wallet $18 lighter, but your blog will be just fine. Don’t worry about a thing.

It will be because all that changes is the URL.

    All About Domains http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/all-about-domains/

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

As you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here if you already own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    Hi frankamelio, timethief,

My thanks for your advice. You’ve both been very helpful and allayed my fears.

One more question: during this 72 hour period, will I be able to work on the blog and update pages, etc?

    My thanks,

    Bryan

    Ah, one last question (sorry!).

When the year expiry comes up, I will likely want to renew it. How do I go about doing this? I don’t want to let it lapse!

You will receive renewal notices and if your wish you can set up auto-renew here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades
