Sub Directory

  Hi, I am a graphic designer and I have been asked to update and redesign an existing website. I had heard that you can create a sub directory so that you can duplicate the entire site using the duplicate plugin so that you can work on the duplicate site without effecting the live site. Then when you have finished you can replace/override the old site with the new site you have updated in the sub-directory? Is this possible and how do I* create the sub directoty? Do I have to ask the hoster?
