sub domain question

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I’m confused. I have a domain name registered somewhere else that is being mapped to WordPress. I did create a sub domain under “my domains” as a free blog. But for some reason my sub domain is directly pointing to my main site. I would like these to be 2 different sites.

    See here:
    main site: metamorafilms.org
    sub domain: mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org

    Can you help?
    Matt

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hiya Matt!

First question: did you already create the CNAME with your domain registrar? Does mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org already exist with them?

If so, and if you want your WordPress.com blog mapped with that subdomain, we’ll need to disconnect your mapping of metamorafilms.org, and make sure you’re mapped to mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org.

Here’s some information about setting up your subdomain mapping:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

Let me know if you need me to detach the mapping for your main domain name. Once that’s done, you can add the subdomain.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

Thanks…actually the design does not exist..I plan to redesign the sub domain. Do I still have to create the CNAME for the sub and main domain to be separate designs?

So in other words, there’s nothing that I actually need to transfer over in terms of designs, elements, etc.

    Hi Matt!

I can help with all of the mapping. However, do you want this done before you redesign the site mattduhamel.wordpress.com (which will be mapped to mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org)? If so, I can make some corrections for you now.

To make certain: you still want metamorafilms.org mapped to metamorafilms.wordpress.com, correct?

Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks much :)

No it can be done now, that’s okay.

I actually want metamorafilms.org a separate design from mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org if that makes sense.

Yes, I think so to your question:

“To make certain: you still want metamorafilms.org mapped to metamorafilms.wordpress.com, correct?”

Sorry, so new to this. I’m use to a drag and drop design.

    Hi there!

I actually want metamorafilms.org a separate design from mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org if that makes sense.

I understand. I was wondering why you didn’t add your blog directly to your main site. This makes absolute sense to me, now, if you want two different “looks!”

I’ve made some adjustments to your domain’s settings, so you should be able to map your subdomain

You can now add domain mapping for your site, metamorafilms.wordpress.com. Simply go to the link below:

    https://mattduhamel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Click Register a New Domain Name.

Then, where you are asked to add your domain name, type in:
    mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org

You may be asked whether or not you already own the domain metamorafilms.org. Just say yes, and continue with the remainder of the mapping upgrade setup.

Sorry, so new to this. I’m use to a drag and drop design.

No worries, we’ll get you up and running! Just so you aware, it can take several days (up to 72-hours) for changes to your DNS to work properly online. So, don’t be too concerned if things don’t work immediately after adding your mapping.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

do i still need to contact registar and add the CNAME?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey there, Matt!

You had added your subdomain mapping to the wrong site, but we took care of that. We’ve mapped mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org to your WordPress.com site, mattduhamel.wordpress.com. Your main domain, metamorafilms.org, is mapped to metamorafilms.wordpress.com.

Take a look at what we’ve mapped for you, and let me know how it looks!

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

Oh wow..thank you. This will take some time getting used to.

    Matt!

Ha! I hope things work out well for you.

If you need anything else, please let me know! All the best :)

I’m creating a new sub domain and want to make sure that I have it correct this time. Just like mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org I would like to create a separate design for productions.metamorafilms.org

So should I map this new sub domain to metamorafilms.org? I have two available selections according to WordPress: metamorafilms.org or mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org…it will then charge me $13.00 for mapping. Which one should I select?

    Hi again!

    What you will do is:

    1. Register a new WordPress.com site.
    2. Then, go to the new site’s Domain’s page.
    3. Click Map a Domain I Already Own.
    4. When you are asked, “What domain name would you like to use for your blog?” You will enter: productions.metamorafilms.org
    5. It will ask if you already own that domain. Click yes, and finish the process.
    6. Then, you’ll go to metamorafilms.org and open your Domains page. Click Edit DNS, and add the CNAME record:

      productions.metamorafilms.org alias of yournewsitesname.wordpress.com.

    7. Save that CNAME record, and you’ll be all done!

Give those steps a try. Let me know how it works, and if any other questions arise :)

So I create a new, completely free blog? Unfortunately, the name I want : productions.wordpress.com is taken…but does that matter since this will be a sub domain under metamorafilms.org?

Sorry, this is so confusing. Can’t I just create a new sub domain under metamorafilms.org by using this link:
    https://wordpress.com/domains

If you want a new design, in the same way you wanted one for mattduhamel.metamorafilms.org, you must have a new site.

It absolutely does not matter what name you give the WordPress.com site. It will be seen by the public as your custom subdomain name. No worries about that :)

Sorry, this is so confusing. Can’t I just create a new sub domain under metamorafilms.org by using this link:

No. This may have been what you did last time and I had to move the subdomain to the correct WordPress.com site. Just follow those steps I gave you and go as far as possible with them. Once the new site is created, and you’ve added the subdomain mapping as I mentioned, if you get stuck, I can help finish the process! Happy to do it…but that must all be in place before I can jump in.

    Thanks again!
