Subcategories don't work and parent categories on touch screens aren't clickable

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! I have parent categories and child categories but some of the child categories when I click on them take me to the parent category even thou the posts are marked only with the child category. And when I click on the parent category it shows posts from the child category as well.
I’m talking about the 1st category in my menu https://nastasime.wordpress.com/

Another issue is with touch screen devices – I can’t click on the parent category if it has child categories. What do I do with it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

some of the child categories when I click on them take me to the parent category even thou…

The only child category I’ve found in the menu that links to the parent category is “Історії з Бразилії.” I find that there are no published posts with that category assigned. If there were, then a the corresponding category page would display posts, and it doesn’t. Are there posts with that category assigned that I’ve missed? Perhaps the title or the slug are spelled differently?

Specifically I’ve found no cases where “the child categories when I click on them take me to the parent category even thou the posts are marked only with the child category.”

Another issue is with touch screen devices – I can’t click on the parent category if it has child categories. What do I do with it?

I’ll call for staff attention regarding this issue. Staff will respond here.

Regarding the first issue, the child menu item “Історії з Бразилії” links to the parent category page, which suggests that the menu item might have been incorrectly created. If that’s what happened, then you can simply change the link URL, or delete the item and create it again with the correct link URL.

If you didn’t create the menu item incorrectly, then WordPress.com might automatically redirect the link to the parent page because there are no published posts with the child category assigned.

it’s definitely not the 2nd reason and I don’t quite understand with URL. URL of what?
When I look at the menu structure I can see that this subitem “Історії з Бразилії” has the original it’s parent category while other subitems have the original as their titles. Do you see what I mean? I tried deleting and creating this category all over but nothing changed. Looks like it’s some sort of a bug
I even tried making it a separate parent category – still the same I click on it I see category Мандри on the page…

Now I created the category again as a parent category. Put the posts back there. And when I tried to make it a subcategory it won’t let me save saying I don’t have the right! WTF

You need a higher level of permission.
Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this item.

I saw this msg before I guess the situation was the same. I have checked the roles – I am the admin and 1 person is an editor.

This is clearly a bug… But where do I complain about it?

Great! Now they won’t show my previous reply…

    Hi nurosaka,

I’m talking about the 1st category in my menu https://nastasime.wordpress.com/

I can see the category called Мандри has one sub category called Історії з Бразилії.

Sub categories listed under the other menu items appear to have been added individually — by selecting the sub category and dragging it underneath the parent category. If this wasn’t the case, can you send a numbered list of steps you worked through?

And when I tried to make it a subcategory it won’t let me save saying I don’t have the right!

There are two users accounts on nastasime.wordpress.com — the nurosaka account you are using to post here is the owner and Administrator. The other account is an Editor. Can you double check whether you are logged in as nurosaka when seeing the error? If not, that explains why you are being told you don’t have the permissions needed to make the change.

    @musicdoc1
    — appreciate your help!

nurosaka is the owner and the admin and that is me. The editor is another person who doesn’t log in here and I believe never attempted to change the structure of my blog.

I did dragging and it finally works! Thank you!

Thou I still don’t understand what was the error. And about the touch screens issue. Can you do something about it?

Never mind the 2nd link I posted in the 1st msg – it’s a mistake. I don’t run that blog anymore. I just noticed it

  • nurosaka I’ve fixed the post link so it’s less confusing. :)

Another issue is with touch screen devices – I can’t click on the parent category if it has child categories. What do I do with it?

You’re right; you have to tap to open the menu. Tapping again closes it. It’s a problem with complex menus on mobile. I’m not sure we can change that. But ideally, what would you like to happen? How would you like to differentiate between opening the parent menu and trying to go to its link?
