subdomain mapping
-
I was reading your support article about mapping subdomains (en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/). From this article I understand that if you have a website domain (mywebsite.com) and a WP blog (myWPblog.wordpress.com), you can map the WP blog to the website domain to create (myWPblog.mywebsite.com). But you CAN’T map a domain name to a subdirectory of a WP site. For example, (myWPeventblog.wordpress.com) maps to (mywebsite.com/event) to create (myWPeventblog.com). Correct? I hope I am not too confusing.
I suppose you should either stick with (mywebsite.com/event) or create another separate WP site for the event with its own domain name (myWPeventwebsite.com). – Tim
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey Timothy!
But you CAN’T map a domain name to a subdirectory of a WP site. For example, (myWPeventblog.wordpress.com) maps to (mywebsite.com/event) to create (myWPeventblog.com). Correct? I hope I am not too confusing.
You are absolutely right. We cannot map to a folder (that is what /event signifies).
You have some options…If you already own mywebsite.com, you can create a subdomain called blog.mywebsite.com. We CAN map your WordPress.com blog to that, because it isn’t a folder, it’s a subdomain/CNAME.
You are also welcome to create a stand-alone site/blog here and have your other website link to it (and have a link back from WordPress.com).
If you explain in further detail how you want the whole shebang to work (ideally), then I might be of more assistance.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

thatrobyn… OK, here’s the whole shebang. I am currently running the WP Misty Lake theme for a charity. We organize several fundraising events. I thought it would be cool to have an event specific domain name mapped to the events subdirectory at ighsc.org/events. But we can’t work it that way. I suppose we could have a second separate WP theme for a given event mapped to the main site (ourevent.ighsc.org). Or just run it as a separate site with its own unique domain name. These two option would work, correct?
The domain name for our existing site is about $26 per year through WP. If I create a second separate event site, can I still get a domain name for it for $26? Or do I have to get the $99 package? Storage space is not an issue for now. Could I also get a domain name from a third party source? – Tim

Hi Tim,
Robyn is out over the weekend so I’m grabbing a few of her tickets so that you don’t have to wait to get an answer.
As long as the only customizations that you’re looking to do is a subdomain for the charity events (like fallfollies.ighsc.org [don’t make fun of my fake event. Fall Follies would be an awesome name. ;) ]), then your plan would work great and the only add-on you would need would be domain mapping for $13.
Within your same account, you would create a new blog, and name it whatever you like (if you’re only going to have one event going at a time and can recycle the same blog, you could call it “specialeventsighsc.wordpress.com” for example. If you need multiple, it could be more specific).
You then would log in to its dashboard and go to Store >> My Domains and add the subdomain mapping which you had decided on for that event. I can walk you through the process for pointing the DNS when you get to it.
Let me know if you have any questions!

“Mighty”… Thanks for your reply. I will probably just set up a second WP site and assign it a unique domain name. So I will be managing two separate WP sites. I will probably use Twenty Fifteen, but does WP have a highly customizable theme that allows you to create whatever features you want by drag and drop? Some third party developers have that.
I tried to use Publicize to link my existing charity site to its Facebook page. But it only recognized my personal FB page and connects only to that. Unlike the charity WP site, I did not create the charity FB page. But I can edit it all I want as an admin. Can I manually create a Publicize connection to our FB page?
-
Hi Timothy,
We don’t provide a full drag-and-drop interface at this time. That may be something which we explore in the future but isn’t something which is available right now.
Most of our themes are highly customizable as long as you have our Premium upgrade. With the Custom Design add-on, you can change the CSS for your theme and build on its base to create just about anything you can imagine. It can require you to do the work, but no one else will have the same site.
In regards to Publicize, you have to be logged in to the Facebook (or any other social media) account which you want your site to connect to. If it is a page which requires you to switch accounts, you need to be switched over to the correct one before you make the connection. Once you are switched over, try connecting again and it should work for you!

“Mighty”… Thanks for your reply. I will add the Twenty Fifteen theme as a second separate site for a wine and food event coming up next November. Then I will assign it a unique domain name. I will be putting my name and contact info on the website. Should I still do a private registration for the domain? Our current site at ighsc.org is a private registration but I do get the odd email solicitation from 3rd party WP developers. But it’s rare. – Tim
-
That’s an excellent question and honestly not many people ask it.
I personally have privacy on almost all of my domains (there are a couple that I don’t, but those are the ones which I’ve registered for testing purposes and I don’t expect to ever see the light of day). In general I consider privacy worth the extra few bucks a year, so I pay it. Some of my colleagues say the opposite. They say that there are so many places where your information is readily available out there so why bother paying this fee here.
So there are two ways to look at it, and it’s up to you!

Hey Mighty… I have to update my credit card payment info to renew my WP domain name at ighsc.org. Do I just click on Renew Now under My Upgrades and fill in the credit card info over again? I don’t see a link specific to updating credit card info. – Tim

That’s exactly what you should do. It looks like the old credit card expired, so that automatically disabled your auto-renew.
Let us know if you need anything else :)

I just updated my header graphic on my WP site at ighsc.org. The graphic seems to be out of focus, a bit bleary. It was the same with the old graphic and it is the same on all pages. Why is that? The original graphic is crystal clear. – Tim
-
The problem is your site is trying to make your image fit in the designated space, but since the image and the space are different sizes, it’s not going as well as you’d like. If you create a header image that is 926px by 252px you won’t have the blurriness problem.
-
I currently have a WP blog at ighsc.org. If I add an additional site under that account, it would publicize to the same social media sites as the original site. But if I want to have a separate site for an event with separate social media sites to publicize to, I would have to create a new second account with a different ID and password. Then create the second event site and related social media sites to publicize to. This reasoning is correct? – Tim
-
Hi Tim,
If I add an additional site under that account, it would publicize to the same social media sites as the original site
Actually, that’s not how it works. The publicize settings for each of your sites are set up separately, even when the sites are in the same account, so you can add a site to your account and connect it to different accounts than the ones you chose for your first site.
-
Lizthefair… I recall from my Feb 16 chat with amightywp, he said, “In regards to Publicize, you have to be logged in to the Facebook (or any other social media) account which you want your site to connect to. If it is a page which requires you to switch accounts, you need to be switched over to the correct one before you make the connection. So to be specific, I don’t need a different account for a second WP site, I just need to be logged in to the social media site when I link the second WP site to it. Then publicize will recognize the social media sites I am connected to and list them to be selected. Correct? – Tim

This is much closer. There are more steps than you’ve laid out here, but if you are logged into the social accounts you want to use when you go through the publicize connection process, you should have smooth sailing.
-
lizthefair… And what would those “more steps” be? I might as well know everything. – Tim

I am learning to use the Twenty Fifteen free version.
But I think I will need more customization capabilities.
I want to upgrade to the Premium version.
But I have already paid for my domain name.
Do I get a discount from the Premium price, or not?

You’ll either get a discount or the upgrade will renew your domain for another year. If you do decide to upgrade let me know so I can make sure your existing domain gets bundled with your domain name correctly.
