Subdomain Mapping without CNAMES (go daddy)

I’ve tried several times to add a subdomain to my account. I continue to get an error message saying “Someone (maybe you?) already registered subdomain.fountainfamilyblog.com, but the domain is not pointing to WordPress.com.” I can’t seem to get past this point to purchase the subdomain mapping. Why is this so difficult? All I want to do is drop the “wordpress.com” off my url. My site is registered with godaddy who said that they don’t provide CNAMES, so I feel stuck! Please help!

Hi. First of all, do you want to map a subdomain (example: blog.fountainfamilyblog.com) or an entire domain (example: fountainfamilyblog.com).

In either case, you MUST point the domain to WordPress.com first (a CNAME record for a subdomain, or nameservers for a domain)

There’s no other way around that message you are quoting. You MUST do the changes on your domain registrar’s side first.
