Hello!! We do love wordpress.com and really need your guys’ help

I’ve already move our domain name to wordpress.com.
However, we have two items not completely set yet.
According to our previous DNS settings,
    we need:

    fb redirect http://www.facebook.com/wolfenglish01
    global redirect http://global.yiecpa.tw/

We do love wordpress.com and we just moved DNS to wordpress.com!!!

    Many many thanks!!

  • Howdy,

Hope you had a great weekend! The redirect records aren’t actually part of the DNS spec, so our system doesn’t support it. Our apologies for the inconvenience!

Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else.

    Hi, there,

I’m sorry that I really can’t understand what you mean
“The redirect records aren’t actually part of the DNS spec”.
Could you please explain further about it? :-o

If wordpress.com can’t provide the DNS hosting as other DNS service providers do, why should I transfer my DNS to wordpress.com?

I sincerely hope that you could explain more about what wordpress.com thinks about the DNS service. I need to assess what kind of problems I might face and try to explain to my company why we should leave my DNS service in wordpress.com if I insist to do so.

    Thank you very much.

  • Hi again,

It sounds like your previous DNS provider used a “redirect” record which isn’t actually a part of DNS and may have been something extra they offered (compared to other providers). For a third-party reference, here’s Wikipedia’s listing of DNS records: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DNS_record_types and then the list from the IANA (which oversees DNS implementation): http://www.iana.org/assignments/dns-parameters/dns-parameters.xhtml

I’m researching if there is a workaround we could implement based on your previous DNS provider; however, with WordPress.com, since we follow the DNS standard without adding non-standard functions, the redirect record can’t be added.

    Hi~

Thanks for your reply and I do appreciate it!

However, we do need this service for us and our previous DNS service provider do provide this service. For example, our Facebook link is too long and a redirect link (http://fb.wolfenglish.com/) is printed on all of our brochures and DMs. Therefore, please help us try to find some solutions and we do love wordpress.com so far!!!
(we transfered our website and upgraded to the premium in a short time~~~we are amazed and satisfied with the website!!!)

  • Howdy,

I’ve looked into a good number of different options and, sadly, none of them that would work would be very easy to do and would require services beyond WordPress.com.

One example is to setup a CNAME on our DNS system (CNAME fb fb.some-other-domain.com) and have another domain’s subdomain redirect as done previous (so the fb.some-other-domain.com -> your Facebook page via redirect).

I’m not happy with that solution.

Another idea, which also has limitations, is to setup http://www.wolfenglish.com and wolfenglish.com to cname/redirect to site.wolfenglish.com or something like that (blog.wolfenglish.com, etc) on your old DNS provider, and set site.wolfenglish.com to CNAME to your site ( following these directions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/).

You’d keep using your old DNS, but still be able to point to WordPress.com.

Both solutions aren’t perfect, but that’s what I have for you so far. Please let me know if you have any questions.
