Subdomain on WordPress.com that is not being used.

Can I acquire a subdomain name that does not appear to be in use?
The subdomain is already taken by someone else, but upon review of the site the only have post is the original, default Hello World post which was created on Jan 6, 2009.
Is there a way to acquire this subdomain for use since its obviously not being used by whomever originally set it up? I would assume that after 4 years of no activity they will not being using it and have probably forgotten about it altogether. Additionally with normal domains that you purchase there is an expiration date upon which someone else can acquire.
