Subdomains after domain purchase

  Can someone please explain what this means? I highlighted what I need explained.

  I think it means that for example if I started a forum on a third party site, and went to my WP dashboard, created a subdomain, and mapped the subdomain to the forum’s URL, the forum will show when a viewer goes to said subdomain (meaning the subdomain URL will show, NOT the forum’s original URL)

  Is that correct?

  I think I found a support article about it, but it says I have to mess with something called a CNAME and also mess with DNS. I know a little about DNS, but nothing about CNAME.
