Submenu
-
I have a main menu on my site with drop downs to subtopics of the page. If I am on my home page I can’t click on one of the submenu options. I first have to click on one of the main options which takes me to that page and then the submenu topic. How can I go to the submenu topic without having to first go to the main topic it is under first?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Is this on https://we2st.wordpress.com/? You shouldn’t have to click on the top menu item to see the submenu. I checked on my end, and the submenu appears if I just hover my mouse pointer over the main menu item.
Are you perhaps using a touch screen device to view your site? If so, what type of device and how big is the screen?

I’m not having trouble with that. My issue is that I can’t click on the submenu item and be taken to that item. Instead I have to click on the top menu item and then click submenu item to get to where I want on the page. I’m sorry if this isn’t clear, I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just not navigating anywhere when I click on the submenu without first being on the page of the main menu item.
-
So that’s not the issue I was having. Sorry if I am not making sense! My issue is that when I click on the submenu item it does not navigate anywhere. I first have to click on the main menu item and then the submenu to take me to the right place on the page. For example, if I was on the Home page and was trying to get to Equipment under Research Areas, I first have to get to the Research Areas page first and then click on the submenu item Equipment. I can’t just click on Equipment first.

Ah. I see what you mean. Right now the Equiptment sub menu item is added as a custom link
#equiptmentwhich isn’t correct. Looking over the site, I can see that you have created 2 different Equipment pages, and I assume one of those are what you want linked on that sub menu item?Go to Menu and remove the incorrect custom link that’s there right now.
Then add the “Page” to the menu by clicking on My Sites – Customizer – Menu – Add Item – Pages
Let me know if you need more help.

Yes, so I ended up moving equipment onto the research area page. I used the custom link to get to where it is located on the same page. Is this not possible with a main menu? I was thinking of maybe adding it to a slide out side bar but I don’t think the theme I am using really allows that.
-
You’ll want to change those three links to be:
https://we2st.wordpress.com/research-areas/#equipment
https://we2st.wordpress.com/research-areas/#facilities
https://we2st.wordpress.com/research-areas/#projects -
So I tried to just put those links in the custom link area for the menu. All it did was take me to the research areas page and not where the link is located at the Equipment heading. Do I need to change the HTML anchor? I don’t think that would really make a difference since there is still the #equipment, but I don’t really see what other issues there could be.
-
Could you tell us which URL, including the anchor, that you’d like the submenu to link to?
-
For the equipment section in the research areas page, the anchor was equipment. So I tried using the link https://we2st.wordpress.com/research-areas/#equipment
-
Just to clarify what the goal is here, if you click on Equipment in the drop down under Research, you want it to go the Equipment heading on the https://we2st.wordpress.com/research-areas page, correct?
If so, that is exactly what is happening for me, so it looks like that’s working.
Or am I misunderstanding?
-
Yes that is what I wanted, you’re exactly right. It’s not working for me still. It just takes me to the Research page and does not go to the Equipment section.
-
@cwoll20 what browser are you using?
If I click “Research Areas” I am taken to that. If I click Equipment, just under Research Areas, this is the first thing I see:
There is a variety of state-of-the-art equipment available in our analytical, high-bay, and wet labs. Some of our equipment has been made for specific projects. -
-
Me too. Current version on Mac. If you use another browser, do you get a different result?
-
-
I did try to do the same thing for the other submenu items under other main menu items. For example, I used https://we2st.wordpress.com/home/#goals for the GOALS submenu item, but that did not work under either browser.
-
It’s definitely working for me.
Try clearing your browser’s cache: https://www.refreshyourcache.com/en/home/

That also did not work. I can just use Edge, but do you think it could effect anyone else trying to view the website?
