Subpages on Dusk Template

I have read everything I could find on this topic. I haven’t found my answer. I am using the dusk template. I have a page about the Civil War. As child pages to the Civil War page, I would like to have a page for each soldier that I research. BUT I don’t want each soldier’s name to show up in the sidebar under the Civil War page, as it currently does. I have tried making the individual soldier page private, but then when I am logged out, it can’t be seen. I tried creating a text widget – I think I did it right – but when I did that, it simply showed each soldier’s name in that widget.
I guess what I am looking for is a way to have a page called Civil War. On that page is a list of the soldiers. I want to be able to link to a page for each soldier – but I want to only be able to get to the individual soldier page from the main Civil War page. Does that make sense? Otherwise, my sidebar will be considerably longer than my post section – it will look stupid. Can someone help? Thanks!

If you remove the Pages widget from the sidebar the sub-page titles will not appear in your sidebar.
I tried creating a text widget – I think I did it right – but when I did that, it simply showed each soldier’s name in that widget.
Text widgets are empty so the only thing they can display is what you type into them. If you use a text widget to replace the page widget, as I have previously done, then only type in the Page title links and do not include the sub-page title links. This will work.

Then how will my readers get to the main pages? Will they still show up, but the subpages won’t? Thanks!

Yes. If you only include the Page title links (and not the subpage title links) in the text widget then only the Page title links will appear in your sidebar and your readers can use them to access the pages.
