subscribe form

Hi — I just launched a new blog and when we enter email addresses into the subscribe form, it says they are already subscribed, but there are no email followers listed when I check users and none of the email addresses has received a notification of subscribing. What’s going on? Do I need to have two published blog posts for this form to work? I looked at all the help topics and none of them address this question that I can see.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

That sounds like an interesting problem – I was able to subscribe to the blog without a hitch via email.

Can you tell me if you’re using your own email address or username when it comes to following?

    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks so much for the help! I did get an email confirmation that you had signed up, but even now when I go to users > Email followers it says “No one is following you by email yet.” Although it does show you as a follower, I suppose because you are following on WordPress.

Earlier I tried using a second email address of my own (not the one I signed up with) and two different ones of my daughter’s (who was here helping me get set up). We kept getting the message that these email addresses were already subscribed and never received email confirmation of having subscribed. And they do not appear under Email followers.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi there:

Can you give us the email addresses in question? If you enter each email on its own line, the software on the forums will hide those email addresses for everyone except for Staff. Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.

    Thanks!

    Sure —

    Thanks for that!

With our subscriptions feature, we don’t track a historical log of the subscription status, just the current subscription status. The current status will be one of the following three statuses:

    1. Subscribed: follower signed up via email and clicked the confirmation link in the email that was sent.
    2. Pending: follower signed up via email, but did NOT click the confirmation link.
    3. Not Subscribed: follower has either unsubscribed or had never subscribed.

For the email addresses you provided, all three are not subscribed. But I’m also not showing that we ever sent a confirmation email to them.

Doing a bit of testing, the common thread here is that all three email addresses are not associated with an existing WordPress.com account. My colleague @aleone89 was able to subscribe since he did have a WordPress.com account already (and why he shows under “followers” not “email followers”). I was able to test that on my own site and was able to confirm that behavior.

I’m going to check with our development team to see if this is a new bug with the Follow Blog Widget. Since it’s a Friday afternoon, it may not have anyone to look at this until next week.

Hope to have some answers for you soon!

Hmm. I believe (email visible only to moderators and staff) is connected to a WordPress account. It’s my daughter’s wordpress site. I assume that (email visible only to moderators and staff) (her email address) is also connected to that wordpress site. I can check with her to verify that.
    Thanks for continuing to investigate!

For what it’s worth, we have tried this using the “subscribe” box that came with the 2011 theme I chose, and then tried after installing the follow widget as well.

Looking forward to learning more on Monday!

Hi — any luck with the development team? I just upgraded to a paid account — is this still the best way to get support? I changed the template but I am still seeing the same problem. I’d like to launch the site this week. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi there!

The issue has been reported to our developers (you can see the open report here). We don’t have an ETA as to when this may get fixed, but as you can see above, it’s on our developers’ radar.

Your WordPress.com Personal plan gives you access to email support. You can go to https://wordpress.com/help/contact to send us an email for faster support. Feel free to reach out to us that way for further help with your site.

Thank you for the response. It seems as if the form is working now. I am not sure what to do about the addresses we tried before that don’t show up as following the blog but keep getting “you’re already subscribed” messages, but I sent the site link to several family members yesterday and all were able to sign up, and all showed up in my followers list. So I don’t know what the problem was but it seems to be working now! Thanks for your help.
