Subscriber Import not working

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello – I have attempted to import 6 subscribers multiple ways (first via a larger CSV that contained a total of 46 subscribers and secondly via manually inputting the remaining email addresses into the ‘Add Subscribers’ page). Neither has worked. I’ve received email notifications both times telling me that the 0 out of 6 of those subscribers have been imported. Why is it failing?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m currently seeing 41 subscribers listed for your http://findtheperfectbalm.com/ site. Are those the ones you were trying to import, or where they in addition to the 41 there now?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, like I said, there were originally 46 subscribers in the import. Only 40 got imported. I tried to do the remaining six manually and it failed. The one additional one in there now (to make it the 41 that you see) had been manually added a couple of months ago.

Thanks in advance for your help! I appreciate it.

  • You mentioned it fails. Can you describe how it fails for us? If you can provide a screenshot as well of the fail or error message, that would be wonderful.

Can you also share one of the email addresses with us. Our forums will automatically redact the email address so that only we can see it. Thank you!

I’m not sure what you mean by “describing how it fails.” It simply does not add to my subscriber list and then the email notification I get after the fact notes that none of the addresses have been imported. See screenshots below.

One of the email addresses is: (email visible only to moderators and staff).

  • Thanks for clarifying. We run quite a few checks to verify we are able to send email to that address, and after taking a closer look at our subscription logs, those individuals could not be imported for the following reasons:

    • 3 are already subscribed to your blog, and cannot be added a second time.
    • 2 email addresses have too many pending blog or comment subscription invite requests.
    • 1 email address is someone who has indicated that they wish to block all WordPress.com notification emails (a preference they have set under their account)

In this case of the 3 individuals that are not already subscribed to your blog, there is no further action we can take to import these remaining instances. We can’t compel folks to reply to emails we’ve sent previously (or that they’ve asked us to stop sending) and adding them would negatively affect the spam score of your emails.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks so much – can you please tell me which email addresses fall under which designation?

  • Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

When you mention designation – do you mean username? If yes, we wouldn’t be able to reveal that information due to privacy and security.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello – just to understand, these are people that have actively opted into updates from my blog and now you’re telling me that I cannot notify them of new posts, and that you can’t even tell me why. How do I ensure that I am reaching them with my content? Is the only solution to use a different CRM service?

    Thanks!

  • Hello –

What’s happening is that these folks have subscribed to your blog but they simultaneously have put measures in place preventing them from receiving your post updates and all communication from WordPress.com. They would need to manage their email account settings in order to get these updates from you or any WordPress.com site they’re trying to follow.

What my colleague was trying to explain is that we can’t provide you with anybody’s protected information from our system. Email addresses and usernames fall under that category.

It wouldn’t matter which CRM you’re using in this scenario. These are personal settings and preferences folks have implemented on their email accounts.

Understood – assuming that their notifications are only turned off from WP, I imagine I can contact them through another means is what I was saying (since they opted in to my blog in the first place). I’ll look for an external service! Good to know.

Appreciate your help and the clarification. Thanks so much!

Apologies – one more question. As I mentioned above, I only had one subscriber before I did my import. The import was 46 subscribers and I ended up with 40 being successfully imported. However, the note above from @staff-totoro says that three of those being imported were already subscribed. How is that possible if I started with one subscriber?

Thank you so much for your help in resolving this mystery! I’m still having a hard time understanding how to reach my remaining 6 subscribers, who are still active on my other CRM platform.

  • Hi again,

the note above from @staff-totoro says that three of those being imported were already subscribed. How is that possible if I started with one subscriber?

To clarify that a bit, it is possible for folks to follow you via their WordPress.com account (if they have one) instead of providing you with an email address. If you look on this page at the bottom, you will note that some people show as subscribers, but you do not see their email, you see their username instead. These are folks that are following you through their WordPress.com account and they are not required to give an email address to follow you using our built in subscription system.

In this case, 3 of the email addresses you are trying to import belong to those people who are already subscribed via their username, so there is no way to add them a second time via their email as well.

2 email addresses have too many pending blog or comment subscription invite requests.

When someone follows a blog on WordPress.com we send them an email asking them to confirm that they want to subscribe… this is an anti-spam measure that prevents folks from being signed up to a blog they don’t actually want to follow. For those two individuals, they have signed up to other blogs (besides yours) but never approved the subscription.

For someone like that if we already know they are ignoring subscription confirmation emails, we don’t continue to send them more subscription confirmations (technically this would be spamming them) so we are not able to import those two folks.

Using some other CRM you would be able to reach these folks, as well as the 1 that appears to have blocked email from WordPress.com. We’re not able to get around that on our end however.

Thank you so much @staff-totoro! That makes a lot of sense.

However, I still have one question left. Like I’ve said, I only had one subscriber at the beginning of this process listed in my “Users” page. I’m not sure where the other two subscribers that were following the blog are coming from, whether subscribed via username or via email address. Where would I have seen them listed, prior to the import? Are you including “Team” (of which the only person is me)?

    Appreciate your patience and guidance!

  • Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching back out.

Prior to the import, they would be listed here: https://wordpress.com/people/subscribers/findtheperfectbalm.com

It’s also possible to track subscriber uptake via the insights page here: https://wordpress.com/stats/insights/findtheperfectbalm.com

    I hope this helps.

Hi – these links are live and do not address or answer my specific question or apply to my situation. I’ll await @staff-totoro response since they have been following the history of this inquiry.

    Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

Just to clarify, @aleone89 is also part of our staff and has complete access to the same tools as @staff-totoro. Therefore, you can expect a similar response from both of them. Moreover, our tools do not keep track of subscriber history; they only provide information about the current status of a subscription, so the information @aleone89 provided is the resource you can use to compare the list you have versus what was imported. I hope that helps!

Hi – no it doesn’t help, but I understand that there may be limitations to the support you can provide. I’m still not understanding the original breakdown of the six people who were not imported per my last question, but I see that there is nothing further to be done. Thanks anyway for your time and responsiveness to this matter. I do appreciate it.
