Subscriber status shows “not sending”

In trying to locate a subscriber, I saw the listing of my subscribers includes a large portion with a status of “not sending.” In trying to determine what that means, I only saw a suggestion to check the subscribers’ email addresses. Some of these are new subscribers, so it seems unlikely that they changed their email address. COULD THERE BE ANOTHER REASON FOR THE “NOT SENDING” STATUS?
