Subscriber tap isn't adding my subscribers

  • Unknown's avatar

Why isn’t subscribers being added to the number on the front end when people subscribe to my site? And not only aren’t they adding on to the number, it suddenly dropped from 58 to 5 and I know this isn’t right.

I also have a host site at wordpress.org, and this is happening on both sites. I’m getting very frustrated with these two sites. I can’t seem to keep them separated. I’ve been messing around with both of them for a week now.

I’m having more trouble with my .org site, but I know you can’t help me with that.

I can’t seem to get any help at the .org site. It’s hard trying to find answers to my questions. I can’t seem to get ahold of a person. This transition from my wordpress blog to my hosted sight at wordpress.org has been such a hassle. I’m also wondering why you guys help people with both the .org site and the .com site. Why is the “help” separated.

I’d appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks.

The help is separated because the software is different. WordPress.ORG has only free software and a peer support forum. Here at WordPress.COM we have Staff but there is no Staff at WordPress.ORG.

I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

If the two sites have identical content, maybe you have 55 subscribers on one site and only 5 on the other.

Hi. Thanks for contacting me. The one I have 5 on is my .com blog that I’ve had for awhile. It just happened within a few days while I’ve been fussing with these two sites.

I’m actually having the same problem on the .org site. It says 58, but I posted on Wed. and got about 5 more followers, but the number still says 58. I’m having so much trouble between the gravatars and other things, and just going back and forth between both sites. Then it seems I keep having to change my password because it doesn’t accept it sometimes. I don’t want to delete my .com site yet.

Anyway, I don’t know what else to do. I wish they had people at the .org site. If I had known there wouldn’t be any “human” support, I probably wouldn’t have done it because I’m not a techno-type person. I can manage some things, but I’m a learner as I goer.

    Hi Debbie,

You mention that you’ve been messing around with each site, yes? That your WordPress.com site originally had 58 and lost all (or most of them) and now is only showing 5 subscribers. At the same time you got notification of 5 new subscribers.

It sounds like maybe you recently migrated your subscribers from WordPress.com over to your self-hosted WordPress.org site. When you do that, the subscribers aren’t copied, they’re actually moved. So you would go from having 58 to having 0.

This also makes sense that you would get a notification of new followers but the 58 didn’t increase. It’s because the 5 new followers were on your .com site.

    Does this all make sense?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. Thanks for getting back. Well, it does make sense except they went to my new .org site and followed from there. I had a link on my .com site and they went to my new .org site and signed up there, I believe. As it stands, I just hid it from the front end and I lost my patience with it.

My new .org site does say 58. And after the subscribers, it still says 58, although I haven’t check it recently.

It should be pretty easy to check for sure. If you still have the emails which give the usernames or email addresses of your new followers, you can check in the followers of your old WordPress.com site and see if it matches. In either case, you’ll need to migrate those over again. You’ll also continue to see new people sign up on WordPress.com until you disable that site, just so you’re aware. We see this quite regularly!

Thanks, amightywp. I can do this, but I don’t know how to migrate them. I’m not a techno person. But if you could tell me how to migrate them, it would be appreciated, and it would solve the problem.

    Thanks again.

Oh! I had thought you knew already or I would have told you in the first place. I’m sorry!

You can migrate them by using this tool right here:

    http://jetpack.me/support/subscription-migration-tool/

If you run in to any difficulties, just let me know and I’ll take a look!

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, thank you so much. I’ll try that the first opportunity I get.

Hi amightywp, when I follow the directions to migrate, I see no “Move Followers From a WP Area” after I hit settings. I also see no “Jetpack Monitor” after I hit settings.

  • Unknown's avatar

Can you make sure that your Jetpack site is actively selected before clicking on Settings? If you’re still not seeing it, could you take a screenshot and upload it to one of your Media Libraries. If you give me a link to the image, I can take a look.

  • Unknown's avatar

I really don’t know a whole lot about this. I could figure it out I guess at some point. I somehow managed to get to “Jetpack single sign on” and checked “match by email” to try and connect the two. It didn’t work. I still don’t see a Jetpack Monitor. What image do you want the link to?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having a little trouble figuring out exactly which step you’re stuck on.

    1. You visit https://wordpress.com/sites.
    2. You find your Jetpack site, click on the gear icon, and choose “Select this site”.
    3. You click on “Settings”.
    4. You scroll down to “Move Followers from a WordPress.com site”.

And that’s where you’re having trouble because you don’t see that section of the settings page, correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, this is correct. On my .org hosted sight there is a place to do this but not on my .com sight. There is no “Move Followers from WP.com Site.”

This doesn’t surprise me bc this is usually how things go for me when I’m trying to figure out computer stuff. :) I guess I didn’t understand exactly what you wamted me to do.

    Thanks for getting back.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay! We have to manually migrate users from a WordPress.com site to another WordPress.com site. Can you tell me the site you’re trying to transfer your followers from and the site you’re trying to transfer them to?

  • Unknown's avatar
  • Unknown's avatar

Okay great! Since the site you want to move them to is a Jetpack-linked WordPress.org site, what you’ll need to do is select that site in step 2 of the directions I outlined above. Then you can choose daerickson.wordpress.com as the site to migrate your subscribers from.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, I did it! :) It says it will send me an email when it starts and finishes. I hope this did it!

Thank you so much. If it didn’t work . . . well, I’ll be getting back. :)
