Subscriber V Follower for Competition

    Hi
    I was going to run a competition, at a craft market, to get email addresses for my newsletter. I now think that newsletters are probably a bit dated and the best idea would be to get followers for my wordpress.com site. So I would collect names and email addresses with the intention to add them as people to my site as either a Follower or a subscriber.
    The problem is just how to add them.
    In WP Admin > Users >Add New I can add a new user and give them the role of Subscriber. There is no Follower role.
    OR
    in the new admin page I can use People > Add and invite to someone and invite someone. In this case I do have a choice of Follower or Subscriber.
    So I am confused.
    Which is the best solution?
    Add a user as a subscriber?
    or
    Invite someone as a Subscriber or a Follower?
