subscriber vs. subscription

I did look on the support pages before coming here :)

I understand what a subscriber is and I understand what a subscription is. What I do not understand is why the numbers are different. If a person subscribes, they have a subscription whether it’s to my blog or to one of the comments.

On my blog, I have a higher number of subscriptions than subscribers. How can that be? Would that mean that they have more than one subscription, such as several comment areas and my blog or something like that? But if that’s the case, then they would be more than one subscriber? What am I not understanding?

One day I’ll understand this and won’t have to keep posting but I’ve been blogging for less than a year so I’m still a newbie. :(

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do you have a Google webmasters account? I do and the subscribers I have to comments made on specific posts are revealed there as well as the subscribers to the blog.

Yes, I have a Google webmaster’s account. I’ll have to go have a look. So what you’re saying is that a person could subscribe more than once to stuff on my blog but it’s only counted as once as far as being a subscriber. In other words, a subscriber could have more than one subscription which is why the numbers are different? Is that correct?

And thanks for your quick reply!

Yes, a reader could subscribe to all of your entries. Yes, a reader could subscribe to all of your comments. Yes, a reader who subscribes to your entries could also subscribe to comments only on specific posts. If you stop and think about it there are other subscription combinations as well.

Hi Timethief, thanks for the response. I checked Google webmaster tools and the subscribers there does not even come close to what is on my dashboard.

I also understand that one person can subscribe to many things on my blog. I do that on other people’s blogs — I can be subscribed to their blog as well as different posts when I comment. So what I’m trying to understand, let’s say I subject to Blog A so that makes me a subscriber to their blog so I get updates when they post. I then go and comment and then subscribe to the comments. I’ve now subscribed to two things under one blog. Does that get logged as one subscriber but two subscriptions?

I wonder why the Google Webmaster’s numbers are so vastly different than what is on my dashboard as subscriber/subscriptions. I don’t know which one is correct or if they’re both correct but they’re drawing their info from different things.

    “subject” should be “subscribe” :(

When we add another wordpress.com blog to our blog surfer we are “subscribing”. This “subscription” will not be included in the count we find for subscriptions through feedburner. The latter are the ones displayed in our Google webmasters accounts.

Okay, I totally understand. I was not thinking in terms of the subscriptions via blog surfer. Thank you for clearing that up for me. And sorry to be so pesty but I was just not getting it.

No problem. :) One cannot receive answers without asking questions. I have long given up trying to ascertain how many subscribers my blogs have. I’m more focused on keeping my bounce rate down that I am on subscriber numbers.

Snap! I meant to type “than” and not “that” in the last sentence above. I need to take an eyesight break. and catch up with you later. :)

LOL, that’s not as bad as me typing “subject” instead of “subscribe.” At least yours is a typo — mine — who knows what I was thinking.

Meh … I’m frequently mollified when I look at what I typed. My keyboard has no letting on it. I’ve worn all the letters off except for the q, w, j, z and x. I get a new one every year but I feel strange about doing that as there is nothing wrong with the keyboards at all. Now there’s an invention I’d like to see. I’d like to be able to buy stick-on letters.

I know this is SOOOO off topic but your keyboard story reminded me of mine. I have a pet macaw that I don’t lock up in a cage, he’s free range. I was taking a shower and I kept hearing a loud happy WOOO, quiet, and again, over and over. I knew he was having fun but since I was in the shower, I didn’t know what he was doing. Long story short, I finally came out and he was sitting on top of my computer table. I stood there looking at him, he looking back at me. About 30 seconds went by while we stared at each other and then he resumed what he was doing that was so fun for him. He was removing keys off my keyboard and tossing them on the floor and would yell WOOO in a high pitched voice.

I ended up buying a new keyboard.

    Yes, we are toff-topic
That being said, I’m laughing out loud for real. I come from a family that hand raises birds. Parrots, cockatoos, macaws, cockatiels, lovebirds, etc. My brother has a blue macaw that’s also not caged. She has a free standing perch. The things she has done are sometimes very amusing and other times aren’t. Several years ago while we were chatting on the phone she undecorated a tabletop Christmas tree and didn’t break a single ornament.
