subscribers after blog name change

I changed the name of my wordpress blog (paperfamous.wordpress.com is now bullscript.wordpress.com) will subscribers of paperfamous be automatically directed to bullscript?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. People who were following your blog via the Reader or via email notifications should still be subscribed. I’m not sure about people who follow your blog via other RSS feed readers, but I don’t think so. I’d recommend you publish a post informing readers of the address change to avoid confusion if they now see posts from a different blog showing up in their inboxes. If you haven’t deleted the old address, publish the post on that site as well for the sake of people who might not be subscribed to the new blog and set it to sticky for a while.

If your blog has been around for a while, you might also want to consider buying the site redirect upgrade for the old address: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ You don’t have to buy this, but if you don’t people who had your old address bookmarked won’t be able to find it, and any links to your old address on other sites will no longer work. This upgrade is a once-off purchase.

Thanks! I went did a post on the old blog informing people of the domain change :)

On the new domain (bullscript) it says that I still have the same amount of followers as I did on the old domain. Does this mean those subscribed through email are being properly redirected?

I’m trying to avoid any purchases, and just get my subscribers to know my blog has changed – that’s all!

Yes. As I said, everyone who subscribed via WordPress.com should have moved with you. Only people who subscribed via other feed readers or who have your site bookmarked in their browsers will not be automatically resubscribed. But they will get the notification on the old blog that they should go subscribe to the new one instead. Just leave that post up for a few weeks so you’re sure all your followers see it.

Also keep in mind Google might keep sending people to the old address for a while until it re-indexes the new site. That’s where the site redirect comes in handy, but it’s not a necessity. People who land on the old address this way will also be able to see the post with the link to the new address.
