Subscribers email notifications no longer showing images

  • Unknown's avatar

The email notification my subscribers get for a new post has changed. They used to see images in line, now they just see the links to the pictures. The images are on flickr. This is true for all subscribers so is not related to their email client. I have not changed anything, to my knowledge. This is important as some subscribers only view posts in the email, in spite of me trying to educate them otherwise. Any pointers great fully received. Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I have done a little testing on a test blog.
Images hosted on wordpress, com show up fine in email notifications to followers but those on flickr don’t.

the thing is this did not used to be case until recently – when my posts linked to flickr images they showed up fine in email notifications to followers

    Has wordpree.com changed something?
    Has Flickr changed somthing?

    more research!
    following this advice

Click on a photo or video to open it.
Click the Share icon Image of a right-pointing arrow, in the lower right.
    Click Embed.
Pick a size and options you want to display.
Copy the code, then click the X.
Use the code in your website post.

makes pictures show up in email notification

previously I was using direct link to the picture

doesn’t explain why my old method has stopped working though

    um…

embed code not being interpreted by wordpress.com correctly

    Flickr gave me:

    <img src=”https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/308/32150756061_f33a925180_h.jpg” alt=”20170112-15″ width=”1600″ height=”559″ />

    which worked fine

    then it gave me

    <img src=”https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/308/32150756061_f33a925180_h.jpg” width=”1600″ height=”559″ alt=”20170112-15″><script async src=”//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>

    which doesn’t

    what is going on? help

looking at some flickr forum posts looks like maybe flickr have changed something. Not only do you have to get embed code but that is wrong and need to delete the “<script async src=”//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>” bit each time to get it to work in wordpress – well actually direct link to the picture still works in wordpress but NOT in followers emails.

(Does wordpress support wait until someone has worked it out for themselves before chipping in on a query like this?)

  • Hi there,

Are you adding Flickr images using the embed code, or the image link? To embed Flickr images on a WordPress.com post you need to use the sharing link, not the embed code. There hasn’t been any recent changes to how this works.

    Flickr Photos and Videos

The embed code might work as well, but we don’t officially support it so can’t guarantee it. If Flickr’s embed code now contains Script code it definitely won’t work here, as script code has never been allowed on WordPress.com.

If you need more help with this, please provide a link to a post where you’ve embedded a flickr image that didn’t show up in the email notifications.

    Hi Kokkiek

    Thank you for responding.

Because my posts were a bit rambling I will summersise:

    – I keep my pictures on Flickr.
    – I add them to posts with the image link, eg
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/colehouse15/31498128533
    – They show up fine in the posts when viewed with WordPress reader or a web browser.
    – Nothing has changed regarding the posts – the images still show up fine when using the image link.

What HAS changed is what followers see in email notifications:

    – For two years, up to 3rd Jan 2017 followers saw images inline in email notifications
    – After 3rd Jan 2017 they just saw links.

This might not matter very much – I would hope followers would go through to view post at WordPress, com BUT I have some elderly relatives who only get as far as seeing the email!

This has been experienced by all followers so is not an email client issue.

    Examples

This is my post from Jan 3rd:
    https://gribinisaf.wordpress.com/2017/01/03/looking-into-the-distance/

This is how the email notification looked
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/colehouse15/32201661221

This is my post from Jan 5th
    https://gribinisaf.wordpress.com/2017/01/05/feathers-and-veins/

This is how the email notification looked
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/colehouse15/32201696601

Before Jan 4th all notifications looked like the former
After Jan 4th all notifications look like the latter.

I am not aware that I have changed anything that might cause this to happen – I am trying to find the reason for the change.

    Thank you for your time.

  • Thank you for the extra information. I was also able to confirm this in my own testing.

I can’t find any sign that we made an intentional change to no longer show these images, but it could be that another change caused this to break. I’m following up with a developer on this, and will let you know once I hear back.

    Hi Kokkieh

    Thank you for your time.

I look forward to hearing the results of your investigation.

  • Hi there,

It was indeed the case that a change to fix something else affected these image embeds in the emails. That has been fixed now, so the images should show correctly again when you next publish a post.

    Many thanks Kokkieh

I will monitor what happens on my next post and mark this as resolved if all ok.

First time I have used this forum – very efficient.

  • Glad I could help :)
