Subscribers numbers don't match

  Hello,
  When I go to my blog, the widget for e-mail subscription says that I have 916 followers and prompts people to subscribe. The exact wording is: Join 916 other followers. What does this number come from, exactly? Because when I go to my stats page, it says I only have 3 e-mail subscribers…. And not nearly enough WP subscribers to fill in the difference. So this begs for an answer. Anyone?
