Subscribers only through usernames?

  I am hoping to make this blog private and only have certain people access it. Do these people have to have a user name in order to be included in the list? Or I can I add them based on e-mail address?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  They have to have a username and sign in to WordPress.com in order to access the blog, so they might as well go ahead and register now. When you invite them, just give them the link to the main WP.com page and suggest they register without the option to have a blog.
