Subscription charging with free year
-
I went to set up a WordPress site and it says it’s free for the first year but still wants to charge $48 plus tax. Do you know if that’s just the amount that I will be charged a year from now, after the free year, if I doesn’t cancel, or is this effectively a payment for two years?

Hi there,
You will only be charged $48 if you decide to upgrade to our Personal Plan. It sounds like you added that plan to your cart when creating your site, but never completed the purchase, so now you’re seeing the notice that you have an upgrade awaiting payment.
If you want to use the free plan for now, click on that notice and just delete the plan from the cart, and the notice will go away. You will not be charged unless you complete a purchase by typing your credit card details on the checkout form.
$48 is the cost for one year on the Personal Plan. All our paid plans renew annually, or every two years, depending on which option you choose when you buy the plan.

Hi @keithjohnsonasu just to clarify, when you upgrade your site to any WordPress.com plan, your custom domain registration is included for free for the first year, but you’ll still pay for the upgrade plan in order to use it on your WordPress.com site.
After that first year, your domain renewal will be charged separately from your upgrade plan. Hope that helps too.
