  Is there any way to purchase the subscription on a monthly basis instead of yearly?

  All paid plans are billed yearly (not monthly), as stated here (albeit in small print):

  Currently, there are no trial versions for any of these plans, but WordPress.com does have a refund policy, which you can take advantage of if you feel any of the plans aren’t right for you.

  For plans and all other purchases, you must cancel within 30 days of purchase to receive a refund.
