Subscription & Membership Plug-in

I need to find and consider a more user friendly plug-in to cater for yearly subscriptions for memberships on our WordPress built site. We are finding that there are too many costs involved with WooCommerce and we are a non-for-profit organisation.
All advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there,

If I can ask, what site is this for? The only site I see under your WordPress.com account is noosawaterstest.wordpress.com, which is not a site that is able to use plugins.

You are referring to a self-hosted WordPress site that you created on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, or similar? Thanks for the additional info!

I chose not to make the site public as per the instructions when I left the question. This site is for a Residents’ Association which is not-for-profit with subscriptions paying basically for the website and to keep the information flow between members and the Local Council.
I still want to keep the site off the Public Forum, but it is a site that has been developed and is hosted and registered as a “.com.au” website.
We have been using the WooCommerce plugins but have found them to be too complex and costly for our needs. We have the Membership plugin and the Subscription plugin (both a yearly payment) and still we do not have the proper help or even reports to know which emails have been sent on out behalf. We have now found that we need to pay extra yet again.
I posted this to ask if there is another plugin, maybe simpler that will give us more of what we need for our money. We are not selling anything, i.e. stock items, only subscriptions, but we do need to know what messages are being sent to our memberships and when they are sent.
So, is there another plugin that may be better suited to our use?

    kind regards

  • Hi Vicky,

The forum you’re posting in now is for the web hosting provider, WordPress.com. We’re not the same thing as the open source WordPress software you’re using, and your site is not hosted on our servers.

The only plugin we’re able to recommend are those made by the company that owns WordPress.com, and that’s WooCommerce Memberships and Subscriptions in this case, which you indicated you don’t want to use any more :)

We’re not able to recommend anything else – this forum provides support to free sites hosted on WordPress.com. Free WordPress.com sites cannot use plugins at all, so we simply don’t have the experience and knowledge in this forum to make a recommendation like that.

So instead, please try asking on the WordPress.org forums. The community in that forum is made up of the people who make the WordPress software itself, and who make plugins for that software. So they will have the experience needed to give you the kind of recommendation you’re after.

Thank you, Kokkieh, for your response. I think I will stay with WooCommerce… I just need to find some information to help me understand it a little more!

  • For what it’s worth, we do have this article that talks about a few different options when deciding what kind of membership site to build:
    https://wordpress.com/support/tutorials/decision-guide-to-build-a-membership-website/

Just bear in mind this one is for folks hosted here on our services. If you manage your own copy of WordPress and handle the hosting, security, etc. on your own, you wouldn’t need our hosting plans. But I thought it could be a helpful way to see some other options.
