Subscription subsidy for a non-profit based in Argentina
-
Hello WordPress (and community)!!
I am contacting you with a question and a request. I am Hannah, an intern with a local grassroots feminist performance collective in Buenos Aires, Argentina called Mujeres de Artes Tomar. I just finished designing a new website for the collective and used wordpress because it is hands down the best place to make a simple website that can be edited by people who aren’t trained designers and has an interface that is available in both english and spanish (not to be taken for granted!). The collective already has a domain that they’ve used for a previous website that was hosted with blogger. They would like to transfer that domain to the new wordpress site. In helping them through this process, I have found that to map to the new domain it seems that we will need to pay for a premium wordpress subscription plus the mapping fee. This was a really sad development to learn of in this process of creating a new site because we had thought that we would only have to pay the mapping fee. $100 USD/year in Argentine pesos is a lot (especially with the never-ending inflation in the country’s economy), and even more for a grassroots collective without a steady funding source.
The collective would really like to maintain their site’s identity with the domain they already own, but it seems nearly impossible financially with the requirement of a premium plan. The collective is an official non-profit (equivalent) in Argentina. Are there any options for wordpress subsidies for non-profit community organizations through wordpress?
Thank you!

Hi there, someone has tagged this for Staff input about pricing for non-profits. To the best of my knowledge currently there is no special pricing for registered non-profits.
However, even before Staff reply, you’ll want to read the differences between hosted WordPressdotcom (where we are) and the standalone WP software to make sure that WordPressdotcom is a good fit for your needs. https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Since you say you’ve designed a new website for them, please be aware that WordPressdotcom users can use (and modify with a Premium or Business Plan) any of the free and Premium themes found in the Theme showcase https://wordpress.com/themes/ however, 3rd party themes can only be uploaded and used on sites using the standalone WP software. More about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#uploading-custom-themes
Hope that helps.

Hi there,
As @justjennifer correctly noted, we don’t have any special pricing for non-profits. However, we do have a Personal Plan that’s a bit cheaper than Premium if you want to use that instead.
If you want to look at the self-hosted option, there are several hosting providers that offer very cheap hosting plans, provided your requirements for the site aren’t too demanding. One I can recommend is https://thisistap.com/. They also offer a free plan, but if you want your own domain you need to upgrade. However, they offer a monthly payment option which might work better for you, and you should be able to add advertising to your site to help offset costs.
