Suburbia theme, choosing number of posts on second page

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I’m using the Suburbia theme, with two ‘sticky’ articles at the top and five excerpts below. This fills my home page perfectly.

But when I click ‘older posts’ on the navigation menu in the bottom left corner page 2 only shows 6 articles (the number I specified for my home page). But because the articles on page 2 do not include sticky articles that are larger in size, my page looks half empty. Page 3 has the same problem.

Is there any way to make it so that Page 2 and each additional page has 9 articles on instead of 6, while keeping the home page as it is?

You can check out my blog below to see what I mean.

    Thanks,

    Ash

    Hi Ash,

(I’m not seeing any post navigation (previous/next) on your blog’s home page?)

If I’m understanding you correctly, you want to change the number of posts displayed depending on whether you’re on the home page or subsequent pages, and adjust this for the number of Sticky posts displayed. This is not possible due to the way Sticky posts work–they’re pulled out of order and don’t “count” toward the posts-per-page option in Settings -> Reading.

If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

    Regards,
    Caroline

I’m having the same issue with my site. It sounds like it’s not solveable. Do you know if this would be alter-able in a .org set-up of the theme, Caroline?

Alternatively, is it possible to make the sticky posts sticky across all the archive pages so that at least all pages would look consistent?

Just editorializing/venting, but this is a weird quirk – it makes all pages subsequent to the home page look unprofessional and seems like it’s giving you a choice between having featured/sticky posts (a normal requirement) and looking like an organized pro!

    Thanks for any additional insight,
    Emma

Here’s a link to the wordpress.org version of the theme http://wpshower.com/themes/suburbia/ You can pose your questions directly to the designer of the theme http://wpshower.com/themes/suburbia/

    Hi Emma!

That would be a good question for the theme developer if you go the .org route, although speaking from personal experience, I don’t believe it’s an easy fix due to the way WordPress handles Sticky posts.

That’s one of the biggest drawbacks of using Sticky posts to power featured content areas–they’re not really designed to do that! But right now, there are few alternatives for featured content on WP.com. It might be a different story if the theme pulled posts from a specific Category or Tag, but Suburbia does not do that.

We’re aware of the problems posed by using Sticky posts for featured content and trust that it frustrates us as much as it does our users. :)
