Sudden large increase in spam – what if anything can be done?

Recently the number of spam messages on my blog has increased dramatically to 300 or more a day. Before, I used to get one or two dozen at most.
Is anyone else experiencing a sudden and significant spam increase?
Any thoughts on what could be causing it?
Any thoughts on how to reduce spam messages?
