Sudden removal of WordPress features

Since the ‘Try CSS’ feature was suddenly removed from plans I was wondering how would one go about getting notified that features are going to be removed from WordPress.com accounts? This naturally has me concerned because if I do get paid accounts I really don’t want to be surprised by having useful features suddenly made unavailable. I was unable to locate any information about this removal on WordPress.com and I strongly value communication; although maybe I missed it or simply couldn’t find it.

I did ask this question within another post which went unanswered but I think it applies on a larger scale than just this one feature as I don’t know if other things have disappeared in the past like this. Even when the feature was taken away the official documentation still said it existed until three days later when support was notified by another WordPress user, which causes even more confusion.

    Thanks!

WordPressdotcom doesn’t normally announce removal of features and it may happen that support documentation isn’t immediately updated to note a change.

The “Try CSS” feature was limited to the Free or Personal plans and only allowed one to preview CSS changes in the Customizer. The changes themselves couldn’t be saved.

@supernovia replied to you in the other thread that “You can use your browser’s “inspect element” tool to test CSS if you’d like.”

The Custom CSS feature itself has not been removed and is a part of the Premium and Business upgrade Plans.

I have however tagged this thread for Staff to note your feedback.

  • Good morning :)

Thanks for tagging this thread justjennifer.

pcvrgamer – We always appreciate user feedback so thanks for reaching out to us about this concern.

The CSS previewer was removed last week. You can use the inspect tool in your browser (right click > inspect) to note if CSS changes are possible for a certain aspect of your site. Let me know if there’s any CSS changes I can look at or help out with.

Hi justjennifer, thanks for the reply. I did see supernovia’s reply about using the inspect element tool but I did not see a response to my question about getting notified about feature removals, which I realized was a larger question than just this one so I started the new forum post.

It is much more challenging modifying and tracking a variety of CSS elements within a web browsers CSS inspect function than just a copy and pasting of text into and out of the WordPress CSS previewer demo feature. After a bit of research though it looks like the “Live CSS Editor” Chrome plugin may provide similar functionality. Maybe this could be shared with other users who are looking for this feature as I and others were.

It is unfortunate though that feature removals aren’t made public until users come across it, spend time time trying to figure out what is going on and needs to post a question / complaint in the forums about the missing feature. Ultimately the result is the same, the public knowledge of a removed feature, but now with the additional time wasted by people trying to figure out what is going on especially when the documentation isn’t updated in tandem.

Just as an FYI but if I was unable to test CSS modifications out in these previous weeks before paying for a Premium account on another site I probably wouldn’t have gotten the paid account in the first place.

Anyways, thanks for listening and hopefully any processes involving feature modifications – additions, changes and removals – can be improved or made a little more transparent. Have an excellent day!
