sudden spike in feed reader stats

The feed stats on my environmental blog http://timethief.wordpress.com are showing huge spikes and then huge drops. Are other bloggers noticing the same thing?

  • Unknown's avatar

Well yesterday mine were about half what they were the day before, if that counts. No huge spikes though: more like plateaus it then falls off.

You know, it’s funny you bring this up, because I just loaded up the forum with the exact purpose of searching to see if there was already a thread on this topic. And lo and behold there was, right on the front screen! I didn’t even have to search.

Some months ago, I noticed a sudden spike in daily feed reads that maintained itself for a weeks, and then dropped back down. Then, more recently, I had another spike that only lasted a few days, and then dropped back down again.

I didn’t see notification of any major new links, so I’m not really sure what’s causing it either. If someone finds out why, I, too, would be very interested in learning about it!

    This is what I see:
    Feb 2 – 293
    Feb 3 – 148
    Feb 4 – 65
    Feb 5 – 271
    Feb 6 – 27
    Feb 7 – 132
It’s perplexing. And I admit I’m not a geek but if anyone has an explanation to offer I’m certainly open to hearing it.

    This is what I’ve got:
    74
    75
    54
    72
    72
    70
    45

By the way, I just figured out that you shouldn’t check your regular stats shortly after midnight GMT and use the new number to figure out how many hits you’ll get for the day: the count will be high because of the large number of WordPress bloggers who are signed in at that time checking their OWN stats.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s what I forgot to share with you by email.

  • Unknown's avatar

well mine has been normal like around 200. Except for one day it was at 864! On that day I had 500 hits for the same search of, “Toni Braxton and the Gay Question.” I could not figure out how it was linked to my blog, as I’ve never written about her. When I plugged it into search engines. I could find nothing linking to my blog. It was weird. The following day I had 200 hits for the same thing. Then the next day, nothing.

    @joshua
For clarity: I’m not listing “hits” or “blog stats” above. I’m listing feed reader stats only.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow, I’ve never really paid any attention to mine:

    402
    283
    408
    384
    249
    455

Oh, and I’m now getting search engine hits for nude pictures of danny boy. :)

    Send them to me, baby!

  • Unknown's avatar

No, they’re mine. You can’t have them.

  • Unknown's avatar

Now, now … why can’t we all share like good little boys and girls? :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    But she started it!

The feed readers on my sites here are next to nothing.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have ‘problems’ with it too. Even tough my refferals show the same numbers as yesterday, the clicks as well. But the counted visitors are about half. I came to the forum to see if anybody else had problems. I guess I am not the only one.

I noticed it the beginning of this week. Less then 200 visitors is not normal for my site. And – as said – the other stats on the dashboard indicate more visitors. Except, they are not counted. I hope they fix this soon…

    @kimbootu
Excuse me but we are not discussing “blog stats” or “hits” or “visitors” in this thread. We are discussing only “feed stats” ie. how many feed readers are collecting information from our blogs. :)

Do you have a separate stats counter on your blog obtained from an site on the net like the ones discussed in the following thread? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/28/can-i-have-a-statcounter-on-my-blog/
If not, then I’m not sure what you think is “broken” or how you determined its “broken-ness” and need its need for “fixing.”

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ Timethief:

I know. But I meant to say: If you compare the other statistics (like hits or visitors) you can work out that the feed stats (as seen on your dashboard) do not work out correctly.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not clear on how that could be done.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Me too. That’s why I posted…

The ratio between normal hits and feed hits should, all things considered, remain constant. Links do go viral but as far as I’m aware feeds generally don’t. All I can suggest is that SOME of your posts are getting picked up by other sites in their feed widgets and causing people to click through, while other posts aren’t causing them to click.

Next time I get some clickthroughs from such sites I’ll keep a record of where they are.
