Sudden spike in spam comments getting through Akismet

Hi,
Over the last few days I’ve received a dozen or so spam comments that were not caught by Akismet. This has never happened before. Some of the comments are strange in that they appear to be regular messages directed at someone else–as if the commenter meant to leave the comment on another blog but just got confused. I’ve heard that blogs are targets for malware. Does this recent strange activity on my blog mean it has a virus? Do I need to do anything beyond normal comment maintenance?

Hi Amy,
Everything is good with your site—no malware or anything like that. Spam is a bit of a cat and mouse game. Whenever we’ve found ways to block something, spammers tweak until they find a way around it, then we patch it up to stop it again, etc.
By marking those comments as spam, you’re helping to patch it up faster. :-)
