Sudden spike in stats on homepage/archives
-
I have just noticed that yesterday and today, my stats are really high on my homepage/archives – suspiciously so. I usually get about 100 visitors a day and I currently have over 3,000 and it’s not even 10am. Can someone please look into this?
Combined with the recent malvertising issue (I pay not to show ads, and my site was not only showing them but redirecting to dodgy-looking fake McAfee sites), I’m starting to loose faith in WordPress.com.
I’ve had this site since 2009 and never had a problem until recently, but it just seems to be getting worse and worse.

Hi,
I understand how unsettling it must feel to see such a sudden spike in your stats, especially after the recent ad issue. Let’s take a closer look together.
It sounds like your site may have been crawled by a bot, which can cause a one-time traffic spike like this. While these usually aren’t harmful, I’d like to help you confirm what’s going on:
- Check Referrers – In your Jetpack stats under Traffic, look for any unusual referrers that might explain the spike.
- Look for Patterns – Bots often show as multiple hits from the same IP or with very short visit durations.
- Note the Timing – Crawlers often visit in bursts at unusual hours.
If this turns out to be a one-off spike, there’s generally no need to worry. But if you continue seeing this unusual activity, please let us know and we’ll investigate further.
For more details, here’s a guide on understanding your site’s traffic: Jetpack Traffic Stats Guide.
Let me know if that helps or if you have any other question.
