Sudden surge in spam comments – what to do?

  • Unknown's avatar

Askimet has been corralling spam comments on my blog, but within the last month the number of spam has increased exponentially. I was offline for a few days and logged in to find 118+ spam comments in the queue awaiting moderation.

I’ve changed some settings to mark anything with 1+ links as needing quarantine, and reduced the time to allow comments to 2 days on new posts. Most of the spam was on much older posts.

Does anyone know what is happening? Most of the spam seems to be car insurance stuff. I don’t know if there is anything else I need to do or whether my site is at risk.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello ksgarvin!
If these comments are appearing in your Spam folder, then Akismet is doing its job. If you find these comments in your regular comments folder, mark them as spam so that Akismet learns to recognize them.

    See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments/

As you are already keeping them in the moderation queue, you can just confirm them if they are in the Spam folder then its fine. If not make sure you mark them as Spam.
Also note, if the comments make through the Spam folder, do not delete them just mark them as spam so Akismet will learn about it and protect it in the future.

Hope this can help, let us know for any further questions.!
