Suddenly charged for “custom CSS”?
-
I’ve had my blog here at wordpress for almost two years. I chose a theme from the ones they provided and customized the colours and header image with the “Edit CSS” option WordPress has. Not ONCE was I charged for making such minimal changes to the layouts provided. Why, all of a sudden, am I being asked to pay $14 for a CSS “upgrade” when all I originally did was tweak the colours and add a custom header image?
Should I search around for a new blog host, or am I overlooking something important? I can’t justify coughing up $14(AND ANNUALLY to make it even worse) for something as simple as changing the colours of my blog. Pretty lame move on the part of WordPress if this is just some way of charging money for something that isn’t worth paying for to begin with. I have my own domain, but only “cloak” the address and have it link to my wordpress blog.
Have I missed something – or is this just the way WordPress is going to be?

I’ve been at wordpress.COM for three years, and we have always had to pay to modify the CSS on themes here. It was also discovered that some minimal CSS changes could be done by putting the code into a text widget at the top of the sidebar but that trick does not work on all themes and according to Matt Mullenweg (Mr. WordPress.COM) the ability to use inline CSS within text widgets will soon by only a memory.
A few themes give you the ability to change some of the colors (9 to be exact). Use the “features” filter on the themes page.

Custom CSS has always been a paid upgrade.
You can change the colours and header image in any theme that supports it without paying for a custom CSS upgrade. See the Appearance / Header tab.
(If there is no such tab, that means the theme doesn’t support it. You can find a theme that does by using the Feature Filters on the Appearance / Themes tab, and looking for Custom Header).

<B>ChaoticSoul by Bryan Veloso</b>
A dark 2 column theme based off of a certain designer’s old website.
Options: Widgets | Extras | Header | Typekit Fonts | Edit CSSTags: dark, two-columns, black, custom-header, fixed-width, right-sidebar, widgets, sticky-post, rtl-language-support, translation-ready
^ That’s the theme I used – along with the information ON that theme… Should I choose another theme or am I overlooking something simple? My layout has been the same since I started my blog, but today – it’s completely different. The header is the same, but it now has the black bar going through it… and the colours have gone back to the original black-ish.
Is this one of those themes that cannot be edited? I see the tabs you mentioned, but no “save” or “update” option for the edited CSS…
Thanks for the replies! I love WordPress and this just kind of bugged me.

The offline CSS functionality is being removed. You’ll either have to pay to do the tweaks you used to do or you’ll have to give them up. Matt said something about it in a different post earlier. Check http://csswiz.wordpress.com or http://wpbtips.wordpress.com for some updates.

I’ve been here for almost 4 years now and I clearly recall the introduction of this black background theme. It has always had a split black bar spitting the header image. Yes I do believe subtle changes may have been made because I’m visually challenged and ChaoticSoul is a beautiful theme but it is also among the worst themes of all when it comes to readability. This is because the font color (gray) and background color (black) lacked contrast. Today I find the theme to be more accessible than ever before – yay! :)

Hm. What a shame.
I’ve used that theme the entire time I’ve had this wordpress blog; but I guess I can’t use custom CSS for it anymore. I came here from blogger because a few other bloggers I know were using this platform to host their blogs.
The colours on that particular theme are okay as they are; but I was pretty fond of the old scheme I was using. I also got rid of that black bar that goes through the center of the header.
Ah well. Reckon I should start scouring the internet. $14 isn’t a lot, but it’s certainly a lot more than I have to spend on a header image and a background colour.

Reckon I should start scouring the internet.
If you intend to scour the internet looking for themes then I can save you some time. The wordpress themes you find on the internet are not the same as the versions we have here. The versions we have here have been adapted and ported from worpress.org themes so they will run on our multiuser blogging platform here at wordpress.com. Also we have no FTP access so we cannot upload themes into our blogs.

Well, if I’m going to have to pay for any sort of customization, I might as well upgrade the whole thing or find somewhere else to host. I wasn’t ever charged for the tweaks I made to the original layout I was using before, so I didn’t think I needed to purchase an upgrade for the CSS. I’ve had the same theme the whole time, just with the header and the small changes I made to the background/link colours. I really like blogging here at wordpress.
Also, keep in mind, when I say “custom CSS”, the ONLY changes were the header image and tweaking the colours. Nothing major at all, really.

@hahayouredead the theme you were using (ChaoticSoul) has not changed, and still has exactly the same customization options it has had for several years.
The custom header settings are accessible from the Appearance / Header tab. It’s free, no upgrade required. (Not all themes support custom header settings, but Chaotic Soul does).
The custom CSS upgrade is for those who want to go further than just selecting from the available options.
Just to reiterate: nothing has changed.
