Suddenly have edge to edge text in default editor, unreadable/unusable
-
Duplicated on Chrome, Firefox, and the Chrome app.
Suddenly instead of a reasonable column width of text in the WYSIWYG default editor, the editor is displaying edge-to-edge text with only a very very narrow column of white space at either edge (way less than a character in width). I can narrow the editing area by changing to tablet or mobile view and/or by bringing out the various sidebar tools, but whatever I type is still awkwardly edge-to-edge in the area remaining. I never saw this before today. Is this a sitewide bug or something?
To be clear: This has NOTHING to do with how things appear in preview and/or published. I am simply talking about the look/feel of the editor becoming unwork-with-able, all at once, out of nowhere, seemingly across platforms.
Anyhelp appreciated.

Did it jUST happen for you as well (today)? I just checked and it’s any post I try to edit, so definitely not something pertaining to something specific I typed or accidentally inserted in the post I’m working on.
-
Well we can’t be the only ones. Has to be a bug, right? Unless it’s the most ill-advised intentional sitewide change imaginable.
-
I thought that was essentially for reporting spam/abuse, so I was like “how is this spam and who is reporting it as such”. But I seeeeeeee. Hopefully there’s some official acknowledgment soon.

I’m not sure because I don’t usually use them. I opened the “post” sidebar, clicked the “tag” dropdown, made up a tag and hit enter and it appeared in the sidebar in a grey box with an X in it. I clicked preview and I don’t see any evidence of the tag, but I’m not sure there should be (nor where to look). If it’s supposed to be at the bottom where the category shows up with the little icon, it’s not there.

sassone, how did you contact customer service? when I click help/contact it just takes me here. maybe i have to pay money?

Hey everyone. To whomever added the tag, thank you!
I did a little testing: I tested this on a few of my sites, and it seems to be dependent on theme, so can you share which themes you’re using, as well as links to your sites?
I suspect it’s that block themes allow full-width content, but default to normal width. My site that is affected has a classic theme. Its content should be the full width of the content container, but that certainly isn’t 100% of my wide screen.
Let me know your affected sites and the themes you’re using and we’ll confirm. Thanks!
And my affected site uses Gema, for what it’s worth.

I’m using Toujours, an older theme. But I didn’t change any settings at all. The look of my web editor just suddenly changed (and it’s not just new posts – I looked at older posts and they’re all like this in the editor). I hope we can keep using the themes we want to use.
-
Franklin, which I’m sure is older. I can’t imagine I’ve altered much of anything of substance — I literally just post all text blog posts. It looks like it’s a “classic theme”.

Thanks folks, yeah this seems to be related to a WordPress update.
You wouldn’t have had to change anything on your sites, but it does look like the editor changed how it handles width in a way that may not be working on (some?) classic themes. We’ve got a bug report in & will keep you up to date.

The change was sudden. Why would numerous people have the same issue at the same time?
Every site here uses
– WordPress core code
– Code for your theme
– Extras we added (Jetpack, mostly)
– Any extra code you’ve added (if your plan supports that)*Your theme code didn’t change, but the core code did change. A recent change introduced a bug that affects some older themes.
Our developers are aware of the situation now, so we’ll update you when the fix is in.
*Edit: of course, your browser and operating system also has code that can change, which is why we often ask for a test in another browser. In this case, though, we’ve confirmed this is happening regardless of browser.

Just adding that I’m experiencing this same issue in the Editor on my test site using Exford, which is not a Classic theme.

The team is looking into it. I have no timeline to provide, but we are aware of it and trying to figure out what is going on.

seems (at least somewhat) “fixed”. well… at least “mostly”. there are now wide margins of white space on either side of the text-displaying area in the edit window, anyway.
HOWEVER, and i’m not sure about this at all, but it COULD be that it’s still displaying a wider area of text than it used to. Like… I feel like there are (still) may 20-35% more characters across a given line than there used to be. (Or maybe I’m remembering wrong.)
-
Can confirm this is fixed now. I thin they had to assign a width for all themes that weren’t working, so yours might be changed slightly, but it shouldn’t be full width on a large screen anymore.
If you want to personalize your setting, you can add this to a browser style extension (Stylus, for example) and adjust the width as you’d like:
html :where(.wp-block) { max-width: 840px; }Cheers!

And @talavernon, no worries. I know it’s frustrating when things aren’t working as expected. Thanks for letting us know about this.
@justjennifer, thanks. This one seemed to affect several themes that don’t use Full Site Editing. Thanks again, as always, for checking this out :)
