Suddenly I’m getting <em> instead of italics
-
I don’t know what I did, but now when I try to edit any of my posts, the formatting is all screwed up and I can’t actually see the text in bold, in italics, etc. I’m sure it’s a simple fix to change it back. Any advice?

If you are using the “<i>” and “<b>” HTML tags, they have been depreciated for a while now and the preferred method is using the “em” and “strong” tags. That is what the visual editor will use, and I believe wordpress will automatically change them. Same for “<u>” and “<s>”.
For italics: <em> and </em>For bold: <strong> and </strong> -
I don’t want to use HTML at all… just to be able to use the text boxes the way I’d use Microsoft Word…

Apples and oranges. MS Word does not speak HTML – the language of the web. Word was designed for print media, not for the web.
Are you trying to paste stuff into the wordpress editor from MS Word?

This support document covers the post editor: http://support.wordpress.com/posts/post-screen/
This FAQ explains about the various icons in the editor although it is a little out of date: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/what-do-all-the-icons-mean/
If you write your stuff in MS Word, and want to keep appropriate formatting, then my suggestion is to download the Windows Live Writer blog application which is very “Word” like. You can paste your stuff from Word into that and WLW will correct all the code so that it is compatible with the web. You can then publish your post directly from WLW.

It just occurred to me that what you might be saying is that you are actually seeing the code when you make a post and apply italics.
Go to users > your profile, and make sure that the “Disable the visual editor when writing” is NOT checked. If it is uncheck it and then click “update profile.”
Then go to the post editor and if the visual editor does not show up, click the “visual” tab at the top right of the editor window.

Thank you! That fixed it. I knew it was something small. And I’m sorry for not being able to explain it well with the poor MS Word analogy. Take care.
