Suddenly unable to update

  • Unknown's avatar

I am suddenly unable to update my wordpress installation from 5.9.3 to 6.0, after years in which upgrades worked perfectly.
I have usually just downloaded and uncompressed the update files, and then loaded them onto my site with sftp. But all of a sudden this no longer works. Instead of the new files replacing the older ones, I get the message: “open for write: permission denied. Error: File transfer failed”
This would seem to imply that the permissions on the files are wrong; but permissions on the website are 644 as they have always been, which should mean that I can overwrite the files.
When I try to upgrade from within the blog itself, I get the following:
The authenticity of wordpress-6.0-no-content.zip could not be verified as no signature was found.
    Unpacking the update…
    Could not create directory.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions as to how to overcome these issues, and upgrade my installation as I have done in the past.
