Suggestion: create option w/best of WP.com & .org?

Just a suggestion for the awesome WP team: I find myself now thinking that I’d like to step up to a self-hosted blog on WP.org so I can use my own domain w/out mapping and install ad rotation software, BUT after reviewing the docs and forums on .org as a non-techie, I’m scared crapless about messing it all up.

I think I’d pay WP to host the blogs I have now with the features I have now with the freedom I’d have with the .org product so I don’t have to worry about any of the tech stuff. The .com is just so damn good, if only I could marry the two somehow…

Is there someone out there doing this via their own .org installation?

Keep up the good work, guys!

have you seen the list of hosts that provide “one click wordpress installation?

    Hosting

I would imagine that some of these install with default plugins similar to WordPress.com. The above page has links to forums about each host, why not ask each how the default install compares to wordpress.com?

The one click installation is a core installation. One theme (twenty ten) and the core widgets and plugins. In fact, the base installation has far less features and options than wordpress.com does as far as widgets.

And the one-click installation doesn’t take care of backups or troubleshooting problems, or upgrades (which sometimes have to be done manually).

And plugins: I just installed one for a client tonight that they wanted, and it borked the theme. I had to dig into the plugin code and fix three things to get it to work right.

Having had a quick look at the forums the general advice to people seems to be “don’t use the one click install”. As TSP says it is a basic set up and often seems to be several versions behind the latest WordPress version, which could give security issues.

I think you best bet is to contact TSP as he suggests and then decide whether to use his services or install yourself with the help of the ,org forums. I imagine this decision will be based on time spent fiddling with installations vs money ;-)

Definitely contact tsp. Normally I stomp on people who pimp their own paid services out in the forum, but tsp is as ethical and competent as they come. You’re in good hands with him. And hey, he’s a rich plantation owner, so he won’t gouge you on the price!;)
