Suggestion for staff.

Can I suggest that the staff make a sticky post on this forum entitled something like ‘how to get a deleted blog back’.
Every day I see the same question asked on the forum, “I accidentally deleted my blog and I want it back.” The volunteers must be driven mad answering it, especially as each person thinks they are a special case and some think their blog will be bought back if they argue enough.
If there is a clear answer at the top of the page maybe many of the posters will actually read it rather than starting a new and pointless thread.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I doubt they will read it – but it would give us an easy link to refer them to – however I might be tempted to lead with something like “everything you need to know about how to get your blog back”
-
I don’t really think a sticky post would be beneficial in this case. The folks who deleted their blogs but then want them back have already read that their deleted blog will be unrecoverable three times before confirming, once on the delete screen, a second time to confirm the delete, and a third in the confirmation email with the final delete link.
If they already ignored all three of those, they’ll probably ignore a sticky post too.
-
As auxclass said though, it will give us somewhere to easily refer them to rather than having to type it all out or get into an “it isn’t fair” debate.
I agree, with his title too, I was just being obvious with mine, if you put ‘deleted blog’ in the title they will be more likely to read it, I don’t expect them to think unless it is right under their noses.
I think people would read it though, I bet they have all seen the three warnings and thought that if they ask nicely enough (or shout loudly enough) they will get their own way. At the least, seeing it in black and white might cut down on the amount of new threads.
-
It won’t prevent them, but we can just drop the link and save SO much time. FYI I’d also like the “difference between WP.com and WP.org” thread made sticky for this reason. Not so people will read it in advance, but so I can easily find and paste it.

I agree with the sentiment, but also doubt that adding sticky posts will really do anything to stop people from posting. There are a lot of repetitive questions.
One suggestion I would make is to change the name of the current “WordPress.com Forums Code of Conduct” sticky to “Welcome to the WordPress.com Forums!” and first thing mention the difference between COM/ORG with a link to the support doc.
Again, it might not prevent them from posting, but it’s worth a try.
-
As we said above, the point is not to stop people from posting; heck, most people don’t KNOW they’re posting, they think they’re emailing staff. The point is to make it easy for us to paste the definitive link quickly.
-
True that.
Just FYI, according to a much earlier staff reply, when folks send staff a support question through the contact form on the Contact Support page, they are subsequently subscribed to their forum thread.
-
Maybe at the top instead of the search bar saying’ check out our support site’ it could change to ‘check out our FAQs’, the link taking them to a set of the ones we always hear.
Again, people will still ask the same old questions but some might stop there. Either way, it will give easy links for the volunteers to pass on. -

I couldn’t possibly be the only forum volunteer that keeps more than one browser tab open at a time? ;-)

Very true, another problem problem with sticky threads is that most folks post through the contact form, they don’t stop in the forums first.
Think of how many Posterous import issues we had while the Posterous import how-to thread was stickied.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t have one, but we should really get something better than sticky threads overall. Something for us to think about. :)

Yes I have some of the links and such on another site that I have up in another tab most of the time when I am answering questions – but I need to add some more common links to that reference and do a bit of sorting

I would suggest a “frequently referenced links page” somewhere but the links I use most are maybe not the same ones that another person would use or want to see

Agreed. Have you considered making your own private blog where posts are snippets (frequently used replies) and there’s a search field in the sidebar for you? The P2 theme would be great for that, easy to add to with the up-front post box.

Personally, I use Alfred to manage my snippets http://www.alfredapp.com/ but a private blog here would be a nice, free, cross-platform, home-grown solution.

LOL: D In case you guys haven’t guessed this I have such a private blog and I’m using the Inove theme. I dislike the P2 theme.

Some Volunteers like challenges and are here to assist with complex questions. They shun threads with repetitive questions in them and hone on the difficult. They neglect adding “modlook” tags to threads despite posting bug reports in the threads they fail to tag. I also consider this to be somewhat like an emergency room in a hospital so I locate threads where Staff help is need and tag them.
I am not into complex problem solving at all. I answer repetitive questions day in and day out and year out cheerfully. Doing so does not make me crazy at all. Believe it or not doing what I do is exactly what I want to do. :)
