Suggestion for Stats Page
-
Ok, I wanted to submit this as an “idea,” but the option is grayed-out for me and I’m not sure why.
Either way…
I’m talking about the Insights stats page, specifically “Posting activity” and “All-time views.” These…tiles? Is that the right word? …have days and months color-coded to represent fewer posts/views and more posts/views.
The color gradient for these makes no sense. If I were to list light – dark on a scale of 1-5 (5 being darkest), they go 1, 2, 3, 5, 4 with 1 being for fewer posts/views and 4 being for more posts/views.
I remember a time ages ago when WordPress first made the switch to the current editor interface, when the gradient went, logically, from 1-5. Somewhere along the line that got changed, and it trips me up every time. I like seeing where my most posts/views are, and I have to look harder because my eyes automatically seek out the darkest color.
I don’t mean to be overly critical, as I’m sure this was intended to be a good idea at some point, and maybe other people like it? But it makes zero sense to me and is mostly just annoying when trying to view my stats.
So my suggestion: Make the color-code gradient go from 1-5. Seems the logical way to go.

Hello there,
Many thanks putting that altogether, and taking the time to do so.
I like seeing where my most posts/views are, and I have to look harder because my eyes automatically seek out the darkest color.
Out of curiosity – what lead you to putting this together? The reason why I ask is because it sounds like this is something that may not be aesthetically pleasing – am I on the right lines there?

Out of curiosity where do you see these numbers 1 – 5? I just see colours and the darkest colour corresponds with the most views for me. That is the fourth colour (blue in my dashboard) as the first “colour” is white ie no views.

As I put it here,
If I were to list light – dark on a scale of 1-5 (5 being darkest)
…I don’t see numbers, I just ranked the shading myself as a way to easily reference the direction of the gradient. And for me there are 5 shades, including white, not 4, and the second-to-darkest represents the highest numbers, not the darkest.
what lead you to putting this together?
I spent a lot of time getting privately annoyed at my stats every time I checked them, until yesterday it occurred to me that there was a forum where I could say something about it.

I would say it’s a matter of visuals that are part of my brain understanding information. In arts like floral design, you learn about making certain colors pop to purposely draw the recipient’s attention. (Elective I took in high school.) You give me a color gradient from light-dark that represents numbers in my stats. If I want to quickly find the highest numbers, my eyes are drawn to the darkest colors, but these are not actually the highest numbers. It trips my brain up and makes it hard to read my stats. I have to glance between the numbers and the color code a few times before I’m sure I’m looking at the information I wanted.

How odd. I don’t experience that at all. What colour scheme do you use for your dashboard? I wonder if it is an issue with your browser or whatever equipment (phone/PC) you use to view your stats.
Perhaps a member of staff could look at your dashboard to see if they experience the same thing? -
issue with your browser or whatever equipment
I mean, I guess, but I’ve had two different computers (Mac, Asus), four different phones/tablets (iPhone –> Android, iPad –> Android), like five different OS’s (Mac, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, Android), and like four different browsers (Safari, Edge, Chrome, Firefox) in the time I’ve noticed this. I’ve also gone from no ad blocker whatsoever to advanced 3rd party ad blocker. I’ve noticed the color coding issue the entire time.
I legit just thought it was a visual change on WP’s end. One day it just changed. Annoyingly. That was years ago. I made the massage device/OS/browser switch only 1 year ago.

Fine by me.

Hello there,

Understood – we appreciate the feedback there.
Would you be willing to share a screenshot of what you’re seeing please? This can be shared using a link from: https://snipboard.io/
Many thanks.

Apparently I was a bit mistaken, mobile shows the color gradient going the right way!! :) In that case, I’m wondering if what I’m seeing on desktop is a bug or something. Maybe it’s my AdGuard. (I’m noticing random things that have nothing to do with WordPress, like my mouse/cursor disappearing over text boxes???) Anyway, I tried disabling AdGuard for the moment, but I am still seeing this:
Note the color-code gradient from “fewer posts –> more posts” and “fewer views –> more views.” The final color is lighter than the second-to-final. Also note, in the monthly views, 4.1K, 4.6K, and 4.0K for Aug 2020, Oct 2020, and Sep 2022 (respectively). These are my highest numbers for views, but note that they are a lighter color than, say, 2.8K in Sep 2020.
It’s so weird.
Apologies for not getting back to the forum topic sooner; I’ve been working 50-60 hours a week in a warehouse, lol.
